Bison City Stakes ($250.000 Purse)
WO- For Fillies Three Years Old Foaled in Canada
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Dirt
August 10, 2024
While the Bison City Stakes has a bit of prestige up north, the actual field for the race could have been better, and when our pre-race pick to win, Rubimaulu, was scratched, the race got a little less exciting on paper. Still, it’s a $250.000 race, and it would be Cycle Breaker successfully moving back to the dirt after spending her last three races on the grass, getting the win with a wire-to-wire effort. Mb Stables is the winning trainer, his third in the race, and D Davis was the winning jockey, his first such win. Congratulations to them! The time of the win was 1:42.09, the fourth fastest in the history of the stake. Let’s take a look at it:
(1/4 Mile- :23.51)- The race begins with our eventual winner from Mb Stables, Cycle Breaker, prevailing in a battle for the top spot with Mo Mentum Farm’s Cherokee Scent by half a length. Cheap Shot stalks the top two from the rail for Mo Mentum Farm, while Four Star Daughter is about three lengths off the pace for Wood Duck Stables.
(½ Mile- :47.29)- We move forward down the backstretch with Cycle Breaker still holding the lead by half a length on Cherokee Scent, who runs to his inside. Cycle Breaker did close the door to the rail for Cheap Shot early in the backstretch just in case that one had any ideas of pushing forward. Four Star Daughter was now about four lengths from the lead.
(Top of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Towards the end of the backstretch, Cycle Breaker began to turn it up a little more, and Cherokee Scent was unable to keep up with her around the turn. It was at this point of the race where Cycle Breaker simply said goodbye to the rest of the field and was ready to cash her check. Not only was Cherokee Scent unable to keep up with her, but neither was Cheap Shot as that one also lost ground. With those two defeated at this point, the only other one to wonder about was Four Star Daughter, but she did not have a late run coming.
(Finish- 1:42.09)- Once we were in the stretch, the race was in the bag for Cycle Breaker, and the only thing that could keep her from winning would be if she suddenly fatigued quickly. That would not be the case whatsoever, as she goes on to win by a couple lengths. Let’s be fair to her, as well. Yes, this was only a four-horse field, but I have to believe that if this was a full field she may have pulled off this victory just the same with this effort. She just probably would have had to work for it a little more. It’s a dead heat for second between Cheap Shot and Four Star Daughter, making any exacta payout just about meaningless. Cherokee Scent dropped to fourth.
About The Winner- Cycle Breaker, trained by Mb Stables and ridden to victory by D Davis, is a three-year-old filly by Tactical and is out of Spun Around. She was bred in Ontario by Mb Stables as a third quarter two-year-old, and they have been together throughout. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her second in seven starts, and this is her first stake win. Her career earnings improve to $208.400.
