The DMR Oaks (Grade 1)- $300.000 Purse
DMR- For Fillies Three Years Old
One Mile and One Eighth on the Turf
August 17, 2024
There won’t be many heading to the starting gate for the DMR Oaks on Saturday, as only five fillies were entered into the race, making it the smallest field for the stake since 2021. The race appeared right away on the schedule in 2003 and has been run every year except for 2013. Recently, it has been a good race for Mb Stables, who has won three of the last five years, included last year with Raw And Real. That filly followed up her win with another in the Grade 3 Jockey Club Oaks and did run in the BC Fillies and Mares Turf. She’s still active but has not been as good this year, at least as of this time. Now, let’s take a look at our participants:
Please Note: Due to RL plans Saturday into Sunday, the recap for this race and all of my races this weekend may not be submitted until Sunday evening. But don’t worry, it will be coming.
1- Lakota Wind (Mo Mentum Farm, ridden by P Lopez)- Claimed for just $9.500 in April, a rather low tag based on where she had been running before that. Whatever Barcelona Farms was fearing to cause that drop has certainly proven not to be the case as the filly has won two of three since then, taking both the $200.000 OB Distaff and the Grade 2 San Clemente Handicap, the latter happening last month right here. It remains to be seen just how high her ceiling may be, and this is a great opportunity.
2- Aedesia (Mo Mentum Farm, ridden by T Conner)- Doesn’t excite me in the same way that her stablemate does, but hey, you never know. Has the looks of a late entry to fill the field to get Lakota Wind to run, and in the days leading up to this, we were lighter on entries. I like her works, even going back to late March, but she simply has not stepped up on the track consistently.
3- Supine (Team 7 Illusions, ridden by Mar Garcia)- An interesting filly that is just beginning to get her chance right now. She has made only three starts, but has wins in her last two, each of which in overnights. At CD, she went wire to wire to win by two lengths and has certainly earned the chance to see what she can do at this level. Like Lakota Wind in that we don’t know just how good she can be yet, and this is a very good challenge for her.
4- Superface Party (Mb Stables, ridden by J C Ferrer)- This race has been kind to Mb Stables recently, and he will bring the field’s most accomplished runner to the starting gate. Superface Party ran in the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf last fall and ended up second. Her success was not immediate as a three-year-old, but she has been flashing that talent in her last two. Back in May, she was second in the Grade 2 Wonder Again at AQU, and last time out went wire to wire for a two length win at SAR in the Lake George. While I like others in here, it is the Lake George’s dominant performance that has me giving her the nod here.
5- Beautiful Eileen (TwinTowersRacing, ridden by A Cedillo)- Broke her maiden in her fifth career start, when she impressively put it all together to win at SA by four lengths. After struggling in the mud afterwards, Beautiful Eileen has looked sharp in a pair of ungraded stakes, including winning the $135.000 Wilton at the Spa last month as a 60/1 longshot. Makes her turf debut here, and it is a tough way to do it. Don’t rule her out, though.
Prediction: 4-1-3-5
