  4   DMR   DMR Derby (GII)

$300.000   3yo   1 1/8m  Turf      122lbs

It seems like the “Derby” trail never ends, and we go left coast for the DMR Derby (GII) a mile and an eighth turf test for the sophomores, and we catch a small field of five for this one.  A sign of things to come?  I’ve been tepid to jump in, but it’s time for the ol’ Cozman to put his money where his mouth is… I’ll take Petranella Man as the top choice here.  He hasn’t won since March, but he was third in the Snow Chief at SA, fourth in the American Derby and third (DH) in the SAR Derby, so he’s just a tick off from getting his picture taken, and I think he finds that extra something today.  Let’s head over to the rail and put Grand Zion in the second spot, that one fresh off of a win here at DMR, winning the La Jolla Hcp.  Solid works, the put him right back in, winning after a break… he could be the one to get past.

  12  SAR   The Hopefull (GI)

$300.000   2yo    7f  Dirt   119lbs

Summer is ending, the SAR is winding down… in the blink of an eye, fall is upon us but not until we let this fine group of freshmen battle it out in a true classic… The Hopeful (GI), a seven-furlong main track test for the 2yo’s.  You know how I struggle here but coming back from a vacation and having the fire back, it’s time to get after it.  We have an early scratch from the big barn, but we will stay towards the outside post and give Without Warning the nod.  Three starts, three wins, two of them stakes over this course, one from the twelve post… ok, what’s the downside?  Nuthin!  He gets my cash!  I like Sweet Caviar a little bit, that one winning a stakes up at WO, and was third in the SAR Special (GII) here.  That certainly makes him a factor.  Fractious plunked down a pretty penny for Extreme Jet, and I like that one, although his maiden win came at TUP.  He’s been as sharp as Harry’s blades in the am gallops, so let’s see if he can be part of the tri.
