5 SA San Marcos Stakes (GIII)
$100.000 11/4 mile Turf 123lbs +penalties
A left coast swing and we continue with the 1/2 purse compared to the old days… the San Marcos Stakes (GIII) has always been a big race, with past winners like HOY Spankersville, last years winner, and other great horses showing past wins over the lush SA lawn… yet, these are the times of Cal racing… quite sad. So what to do at the windows for this one… The Card and I see it the same, just flipped, so maybe we have another figured out, or… anyway, I’m taking Green Flag as the top selection. He won at a mile and a quarter last summer, looked good taking the Artie Schiller at AQU and kicks off his ’24 season in a spot where I really think he can shine. Cochabamba ran a very fast time over this course when obliterating Cal-breds in the Unusual Heat Turf Classic where he set a new stakes record and was only a few ticks off of the mile and an eighth track record… impressive race. He also has a long line of on-the-board stakes efforts prior to that, so… yeah, he’s tough.
