10 GP The Pan American (GII)
$215.000 4yo&Up 11/2 Mile InTurf 124lbs +penalties
Sometimes you just have to wonder why they insist on running races on a surface that just doesn’t exist, then you remember… Riggins Racing stays hot and takes The Pan American (GII) as Cochabamba repeats after winning the Canadian Turf (GIII) on the real GP lawn, getting to the wire in 2:24.69 and taking the three-horse photo, and the win. It took that last foot or so to decide this mile and a half marathon as he, On Fire and Fanatical Empire hit the wire like they were singing into the same microphone… but the 4yo homebred colt by Aggravation – Remdesivir, by Niagra, took the lead vocal and the Kodak moment. It’s his sixth lifetime win, three of those coming this season and a 3-1-0 from four starts is a grand way to start the year, for sure.
On Fire, from the Mb Stables monster barn, closed like gangbusters to just miss, and nosed out pace-setter Fanatical Empire, from the Bigchief Stables, those two running second and third. It was another length to Devils Delight, a Big Jd Racing trainee, in the minor position. We had no scratches, the turf was listed as Firm, and nine lengths covered the field of nine. Congrats to the Connections!
It should be noted that Neds Influence, a multiple graded stakes winner and earner of more than $931.000 was retired to stud after finishing last today. We wish him well in the breeding shed.
