The King’s Plate ($1,000.000 Purse)
WO- For Three Year Olds Foaled In Canada
One Mile and One Quarter on the Dirt
August 16, 2025
Some of the best Canadian born three-year-olds took to the track on Saturday in hopes of taking the top share of the $1,000.000 purse that was offered in the annual King’s Plate. Mo Mentum Farm and Mb Stables entered six of the eleven horses, but the trophy is going home with Asgar, as longshot Sweet Caviar picked up the biggest win of his career. This is a horse that had won just two of ten races coming into this and had no victories since his win here in the Victoria Stakes thirteen months ago. He’d be dropped into optional claimers, and was very close, close enough to where Asgar was confident enough to send him to the King’s Plate. It would prove to be a great decision as Sweet Caviar came from well off the pace to grab the victory! This is the first win in the race for both Asgar and jockey P Lopez. Congratulations to them! The time of the win was 2:01.04, the third fastest in the race’s history. Let’s take a look at it:
(½ Mile- :47.11)- Out of the gate, Consumed By Fire breaks well for Big Guns Stable, and running with him initially are Asgar’s Smitten and The Sidley Stud’s Mango Or Mint. However, that would change during the opening turn, as the Mb Stables- trained Straight Cash Home would surge to the front, and at the same time both Smitten and Mango Or Mint decided that they no longer wanted anything more to do with Consumed By Fire and dropped about two to three lengths from the lead. Up front after half a mile, we end up with Straight Cash Homie being narrowly in front of Consumed By Fire, with Smitten and Mango Or Mint still themselves about a length and a half in front of our Mo Mentum Farm fillies, Love and Eighteen Ninety Two. Next is our eventual winner from Asgar, Sweet Caviar, who is scored as being eight lengths from the leaders. Even with that, he’s a length ahead of Forever Martian (Mo Mentum Farm), who is also a length ahead of our trailing trio, Conscientious (Mb Stables), Banned (Mb Stables), and Street Magician (Angelos Stable).
(3/4 Mile- 1:11.00)- Cruising right along on in front, Straight Cash Homie and Consumed By Fire are now up by six on Smitten and Mango Or Mint who are side by side for second. It’s a length and a half to Eighteen Ninety Two and Love, with Sweet Caviar still in seventh, and now running ten lengths off the lead. He has company now to his inside as Forever Martian pulls up to his inside. At the back, Conscientious, Banned, and Street Magician are unconcerned with what is going on in front of them.
(Top of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Around the turn we go, and Straight Cash Homie is looking to take his lead straight to the wire and cash in. He’s put away the tiring Consumed By Fire, but the rest of the field is cutting into the advantage. Mango Or Mint seemed to be in a great spot to strike while running third on the rail, though Smitten was falling into the clutches of Love, as well her stablemate, who was full of run from about midway into the turn. He’d take it about four wide into the stretch, getting closer but still had about five to six lengths to make up on the leaders. The story remained similar for Forever Martian, and those that were behind them were also getting closer, with Conscientious running right behind and Street Magician moving to the far outside. Banned would hope for lanes to develop closer to the rail.
(Finish- 2:01.04)- Into the stretch, Straight Cash Homie was clearly hoping his large advantage would hold up and he would hang on for the win, but that was not about to happen for him. Though, with a furlong to go, it seemed like he could be able to. That’s when we saw others dig in, and in particular, Sweet Caviar was charging hard from the outside. The 18/1 longshot did all he could, and in the closing moments when he needed to find a little more run, he responded to the urging of P Lopez to do just that. But it would soon not be Straight Cash Homie, but another Mb Stables runner as his biggest challenger. Conscientious had followed him through but did not have a clear lane for his own until Sweet Caviar was able to clear some of the other rivals. Once he did that, Conscientious looked to make the pass. Meanwhile, Forever Martian was also making a push in the late moments. For a horse that had been a little snake bitten at the wire in recent optional claimers, if Sweet Caviar knew better, he might of been thinking that was going to happen again. But not this time, he was far too strong with sights set on Straight Cash Homie, that his own advantage on the others would be enough to last. Sweet Caviar goes on to win by a half a length, over a second-place photo that sees Conscientious prevail over Forever Martian. Straight Cash Homie does hang on for fourth place spoils, over Street Magician and the disappointing in the stretch Mango Or Mint. The rest of the order will read Banned, Smitten, Eighteen Ninety Two, Love, and Consumed By Fire.
About The Winner- Sweet Caviar, trained by Asgar and ridden to victory by P Lopez, is a three-year-old gelding by Great Caviar and is out of Sweet Aldonza. He was bred as a first quarter two-year-old in Ontario by Asgar, the only trainer for which he has ever known. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his third in 11 starts, and his second stake win. His career earnings jump to $779.900.
