The Lake Placid (Grade 2)- $400.000 Purse
SAR- For Fillies Three Years Old
One Mile on the Inner Turf
August 23, 2025
The Lake Placid seemed like it would be a wide-open race, as six fillies looked to get a big win on the undercard of the Travers. It’s understood why this race was not a part of the Pick ‘em, but it would have been very interesting to see the picked percentage distributions on this field. Grabbing the win would be Rain Rattle, a filly that made her turf debut in her last start and won the San Clemente Handicap out at DMR. Now, she goes across the country to go 2-for-2 on the grass, so she has certainly found a home on the surface. The Bears Stable filly was our second choice on our picks, and she grabs the first Lake Placid win for her trainer. Aboard was J R Velazquez, who wins his second, as he had also won the race last year. Congratulations to them! The time of the win was 1:33.51, which cannot be compared to anything as it was the first time the race was run at this distance. Let’s take a look at it now:
(1/4 Mile- :23.17)- Asgar’s Amazing Nation is the quickest out of the gate and leads the field into the clubhouse turn. But just when we were about to write her in as the leader at first call, Sweet Cherries, from Mb Stables, as different ideas, pushes forward and has the lead by a neck at this point of the race. Stalking the top two will be out eventual winner from Bears Stable, Rain Rattle, who is content to just let Sweet Cherries go on by her at this point. There’s a break of about two to Lifes Good (D J C Racing Stables) in fourth, and she is followed by No Ones Comparing (Mb Stables) and Heart And Soul (Riggins Racing).
(½ Mile- :46.47)- Sweet Cherries starts to inch away from Amazing Nation early in the backstretch, but then Amazing Nation decides she wants to be up alongside her again and is back within a half length as they approach the top of the turn. Rain Rattle lets them have their fun in front of her, as she patiently waits for her time to strike. There’s a now a gap of at least three to Lifes Good and No Ones Comparing, who now run together. Heart And Soul is a length behind them.
(Top of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- Amazing Nation is back in front soon as the run around the turn again, and she will only pull away from Sweet Cherries as it looks like that one has had enough. Approaching the exit of the turn, there would be some daylight for J R Velazquez to take advantage of close to the rail, which mostly allowed Rain Rattle to maintain her lane. Now, she could take advantage of it as the stretch run was set to begin. Further back, No Ones Comparing was getting ready to take the Mb baton from Sweet Cherries. Lifes Good And Heart And Soul still had work to do, but enough time if they could possibly make it happen.
(Finish- 1:33.51)- Rain Rattle slowly made gains on Amazing Nation early in the stretch, before taking the lead with less than a furlong to go. With that one now in her rear view, the concern would be the advancing No Ones Comparing on the far outside. Approaching the wire, Rain Rattle still had plenty left, to draw further away from Amazing Nation, and to maintain about a length on No Ones Comparing as she gets the victory! No Ones Comparing will be second, over Amazing Nation, Lifes Good, Heart And Soul and Sweet Cherries.
About The Winner- Rain Rattle, trained by Bears Stable and ridden to victory by J R Velazquez, is a three-year-old filly by La Lune Rain and is out of Rattle French. She was bred by T Boy Racing in West Virginia as a first quarter two-year-old and was acquired by Bears Stable with a $4.000 claim in August of last year. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her ninth in 15 starts, her fifth stake win and third graded win. Her career earnings are now $731.600.
