The Untapable Stakes
KD Race #2 6 1/2f Turf Stake
Purse $1,000.000 For Fillies Two Years Old.
Like the colts’ version there hasn’t been much to come out of the 4 runnings of this race with the exception of Let Me Explain which is of course exceptional. Mb Stables has won three of the four runnings and looks to get another here, let’s find out if he has a chance.
1 Crocodile Kiss Mo Mentum Farm Prat F 122
An all the way maiden winner second up he tried to do the same from a wide draw in the Bolton Landing but found it too tough and faded a little into fourth that day. This draw will give her a much easier run in this race and an easy stalk running the paint will certainly benefit her. The turf king will be keen to pick up some more grass money here and has every chance with this entry.
2 Smokin Fire Red Fox Farms Lezcano J 122
The way this one finished in the Colleen Stakes last time you would think this mile will really suit her, but she won’t find closing so easy from an inside draw in this full field. It is possible the mile will help her track the pace a bit better though and she could be a real threat from this great gate.
3 Miss Perfect Devil La Canada Racehorses Rodriguez Jam 122
Touched off by Smokin Fire in the Colleen Stakes, there won’t be much between them again today so the question will be which one is improved by the mile. Expected to sit just behind the speed, she should get a good run from here and may get first run on her old rival again.
4 Song Of The Angels Riggins Racing Corrales G 122
Didn’t quite see the seventh furlong out two back but won her maiden at SAR last time with a game dead heat and is a definite chance. Her consistency and experience will stand her in good stead although I do wonder whether the trip will stretch her too much.
5 Tranect Acber Farms Lopez P 122
Hugely impressive in winning her maiden at MTH last time when switched to the turf she is certainly an interesting sort whose works are right up there with the best in this field. Lopez takes the reins again and this could be my each way bet of the race.
6 Osprey Point Acber Farms Geroux F 122
I keep saying it, but the fact that stable mates get drawn together so often is way beyond coincidence and here we see it once again as Acber gets the draw monster treatment. Though this one was a close sixth in the My Dear and a two-race winner I would rate it just behind its stable mate although there doesn’t look much between them. An on-pace type I expect her to be fighting for the front early on unless the gaming buttons are engaged.
7 Queen Annes Revenge Bigchief Stables Zayas E J 122
A good State bred maiden winner last time but it was a field with just three other rivals so it is hard to weigh up. She won it like a good horse though and comes here with her works in the ballpark and every chance.
8 Indubita Mb Stables Gaffalione T 122
Already a stakes winner when she took the Bolton Landing, she looks a big hope to continue the stable dominance in this race. Stepping up in trip, she should get the mile on her breeding and is the obvious choice to win this. A closer by nature, the draw won’t help much as she won’t get any advantages but if she can get into mid pack and launch early enough, well, it looks obvious.
9 Salute And Serve Maxmillion Farm Jaramillo E 122
The stable isn’t afraid to run maidens in these big juvenile races and whilst this one won’t be a maiden for long, this looks a tough race for her to break it today. Two fair efforts and decent works she is no forlorn hope but there are better chances from the stable.
10 Trickyster Williams9 Maragh Ro 122
Well, we all know the stable loves winning these big juvenile races and this is one of the most experienced horses in the race. A promising run in the Astoria was followed by a poor effort in the My Dear last time, but she switches to turf today and on the evidence of her work on this surface may just be improved by it.
11 Narcissa Delta Farms Torres Jo 122
A State bred winner at PEN taking on a $1,000.000 stakes race may not look a viable prospect. but her 1.10 and 1 work suggests she is far better than that and she may be the dark horse in this race. The trip should suit but the draw will make it tough, however I would expect her to go back and rattle home so it may not work out too bad.
12 Top Nurse Our Athletes Curtis B 122
Another that comes to the turf for the first time, she has been pretty good on the dirt so if she likes this surface could run well. The ate will make it tough but she has ability and deserves her chance.
13 Bountiful Maxmillion Farm Gutierrez Mario 122
Not the best worker in the race but made all to win over a mile last time and may use the wide gate speed push to do the same again today. If she gets it all her own way she could surprise.
14 Theresaplaceinfrance Nakamura Stables Bejarano R 122
Well, this filly seems to be one of those that the draw monster punishes in every race. There are a few like this that always seem to get a wide draw and whilst her running style is OK with it as she tends to go back, she will have a lot to run round if she is going to win today. Interestingly I would say she is the best horse in the race after her win in the My Dear and third in the Astoria and I am not too worried about her tackling turf for the first time here. Class is certainly a factor, and she has that so maybe she can overcome the draw monster again.
SUMMARY
Theresaplaceinfrance looks the one on paper, but the draw will mean she has to run round thirteen horses before she even thinks of winning and that may be too tough. Indudita looks the more obvious choice although she is no certainty as maybe there is some value in the well drawn Smokin Fire.
