Keeneland’s Franklin (G2) brings together a salty cast of turf-dash specialists going 5½ furlongs on the grass for a $400.000 purse, open to fillies and mares 3yo & up. Historically this race tilts to mares in sharp late-season form exiting summer graded sprints; several here fit that profile off stakes runs at KD, Saratoga, and Churchill. No prior Franklin winner returns, so there’s no repeat bid.
1. Shine To Class (Our Athletes) — Jockey: Velazquez J R — Projected Odds: 7-2
Fleet 3yo has been a model of consistency on turf sprints (4-for-6 on grass) and arrives off a good third in the Music City (G2) on soft going at KD after winning the Pea Patch at ELP and the Limestone at KEE in the spring. She’s tactical but can flat-out send, and her 5½f wins at CD/KEE suggest this trip is ideal. With Velazquez taking over and bullet turf blows in the holster, she’s a major win threat if she shakes free early.
2. Stellar Strength (Mb Stables) — Jockey: Lopez P — Projected Odds: 5-2 (Likely Favorite)
Ultra-reliable mare with 10 wins (all but one on turf) and a monster 2025: wins in the Mardi Gras, Giants Causeway (G3), Unbridled Sidney (G3) and a hard-fought second in the KD Ladies Sprint (G2). She routinely puts herself on the engine and stays, and Lopez has already nursed out multiple narrow graded scores at exactly 5½f. Drawn inside the other speed, she’s the horse to catch and beat.
3. Ohara (Royalty Stables) — Jockey: Geroux F — Projected Odds: 8-1
Honest and improving: sharp N3X win at ELP and G2 Intercontinental show two back when pressing throughout. Pure turf-sprint profile with enough gate zip to keep the rail pair honest, but she’s also shown she can sit just off and punch. Third off the layoff with steady turf works, she’s a value exotics key who could capitalize if the top speeds spar too long.
4. When Doves Cry (Big Jd Racing) — Jockey: Curtis B — Projected Odds: 10-1
Versatile mare toggles between sprints and routes and comes in off a Saratoga turf sprint stakes win with a perfect pressing trip. Graded-placed at 8½f this summer and repeatedly competitive at 5½f/KEE. She’s not quite as fast early as the very top speeds, but her stalk-and-pounce style plays well if the inside burners hook up. Fringe win shot, solid underneath.
5. Confident Elegance (Maxmillion Farm) — Jockey: Corrales G — Projected Odds: 12-1
Cutting back again after a route-centric midseason that included the Ky Oaks trail; her best sprint try this cycle was a bold Caress (G3) near-miss before a compromised Music City. With added cut-back and Corrales up, she could draft midpack and make one run. Needs a hot pace to land a knockout but has the back class to spice up trifectas.
6. Sister Nancy (D J C Racing Stables) — Jockey: Bejarano R — Projected Odds: 6-1
A reliable late-running sprinter who already owns a graded 5½f win at SAR this season and a strong third on soft in the Unbridled Sidney. Toss the KD Ladies Sprint—she never got involved from the far outside. Turf drills at KEE signal readiness; with any melt-up ahead of her, she’s a live late threat and a must-use in race wagers.
7. Frozen Mist (Maxmillion Farm) — Jockey: Bridgmohan S X — Projected Odds: 3-1
Classy mare won the KD Ladies Sprint (G2) last out with a perfect tracking trip and earlier dueled-and-held in the Intercontinental before just missing. She’s proven at KEE (spring allowance win) and owns the ideal stalker’s gear to sit behind the speed of Stellar Strength/Shine To Class. Rock-solid win contender who rarely runs a bad one at this trip.
Pace Picture & Predicted Outcome
Early: Stellar Strength (2) breaks running and looks intent to lead or sit a neck clear; Shine To Class (1) is right there from the rail, with Ohara (3) applying outside pressure.
Stalkers: Frozen Mist (7) parks in the prime pocket, while When Doves Cry (4) tracks a length or two behind that wave.
Closers: Sister Nancy (6) and Confident Elegance (5) wait and launch late.
Given the draw and recent tape, Stellar Strength has a slight tactical edge to control the fractions; Frozen Mist figures to get the run of the race, and Shine To Class is dangerous if she clears. Sister Nancy is the one flying late if the top trio overdo it.
Pick: Stellar Strength
Exacta box: Stellar Strength (2) / Frozen Mist (7)
Trifecta uses: add Shine To Class (1) and Sister Nancy (6)
