With eight horses across the track in a speed duel heading into the first turn the far outside horse and eventual winner Gaelic Commander seemed to be up against it. More than half the field was apparently intent on a front running strategy which is logical in a 5f turf sprint at Del Mar, but Gaelic Commander let none of it interfere with his run to the wire in what turned out to be a dominating performance.

Winner: Gaelic Commander Commanding The Gale/Bee Pure Chai (Sezarchai). What a courageous performance. From post 14 he was eight wide in a fight for the lead going into the turn and was really never better than 6 wide at any time, yet he powered home to prevail by a determined three quarters of a length. This was the fifth Breeder’s Cup win for Barcelona Farms but their first since 2015. In the preview I called him interesting. He definitely was.

Second: Into Fitness Conquest/Chatty Cathy (Chase My Tail Lights) Almost gave Luz International their first BC win via a smart tactic and ride which took off the pace from his inside gate draw. He let the pacesetters have at it while he sat chilly and took advantage of a perfect trip coming up through the open rail when tired pacesetters drifted out for him. Came back to his Saratoga form and ran a great second. 

Third: Mayor of Win City Chevely Park/Envious (Cherokee Sunrise) Mo Mentum Farm two-year-old originally seemed to want to contest the early pace but wisely took back a little and picked off the tiring leaders through the stretch run almost catching the leader and just getting nipped for second at the wire. 

Fourth: Ideal Candidate Political Pressure/Urban Mess (Great Bounty) Another good grass effort from Aer Stables standard bearer. Took back and dropped to the inside and came through the field nicely despite having to weave through the field a bit in order to take the fourth-place prize. 

Congratulations to the top finishers and especially to Barcelona Farms for that gutsy win ten years in the making.
