A year ago, South Star drew post position fourteen and finished third in the CC Canterbury missing by less than a length. Twelve months later and drawing thirteen starting positions inward he came home the winner. This is the five-year-old’s fourth win in his last five races.
Winner: South Star (Onlineracingclub.com/J. McKee) Sinissippi Star/Revved Injen (Cherokee Sunset) In the preview of this race I said the inside post gave him the perfect opportunity to use his early speed to work out a win and that is exactly what he did. He broke sharply and when several came forward to challenge for the pace he sat on the rail and saved ground the whole way while his pace competitors were forced to stay wide the whole way. He held on strongly in the stretch and held off the fast-closing Kings Path. Four wins in five starts without a bad effort in the last year. Interesting to see where he goes from here if he holds that form.
Second: Kings Path (La Canada Racehorses/S. Sanjur) Shark/Acatour (Falling Angel) Was on the lead and with the pacesetters when they broke but smartly took back off of the pace when speed duel developed. Was the beneficiary of a great trip and came through an opening as leaders tired and rallied strongly through the stretch. Just missed getting up for the big prize.
Third: Marcus Antoninus (Mojica Racing/J.L. Ortiz) Doc Holliday/From The Gods (Calling The Gods) He was part of the pace from the beginning. He never reached the lead but was never far off of it and never took back. Strong effort and held on really well and only missed by a long neck.
Fourth: Cambridge (Spb Racing/F. Geroux) Freddo-Cappuccino/Zendaya (Fairfield Road) Also ran a strong race as part of the hot pace. Post position and wide trip took its toll, but this is a tough speedy four-year-old who never seems to miss by much when he isn’t actually the winner.
The quality of this field demonstrates the toughness of the CC series. Nothing is easy at HRP even in a field of former claimers. Congratulations to South Star and Onlineracingclub.com on a hard-fought win.
