The Withers 1 1/8 on Dirt Grade 3
Purse $200.000 For Three Year Olds.
Self Love from Mb Stables did me well Saturday by winning the Withers Stakes as my number one selection given out to the betting public in a very wide-open race. The diminutive powerhouse proved too much racehorse late in holding off fast closing Excavate from Acber Farms for the win. “Love” has now gone over the $400.000 mark and has yet to be out of the trifecta in his life. Congrats to the barn and all the connections! Excavate ran a banger for Acber Farms today, flying down the lane to just get denied in his first start with winners. Nice job and clearly one to watch. Wealthy B Wonka also from Mb Stables ran big in defeat as he pressed the pace and never gave up. Good looking performance by him today as well. Byte City from DJC Racing Stables closed good ground himself to round out the superfecta. He was taken for a mere $20.000 and has made two good runs right off the claim in graded stakes. Another to keep an eye on.
Of the rest:
Firing Squad from TwinTowersRacing flew like a horse shot out of a cannon from his outside draw and opened up further than the running lines show between calls. The gate draw surely hurt his chances and he did well to stay involved for the fifth-place finish that he earned today. Tab for next time out with a decent gate.
Minnesota Heat from The Sidley Stud came out, settled and ran sixth most of the way. Had slight trouble when he got jostled on the far turn. Even effort today.
Suffering Fools from Alydar Stables broke with the bulk of the field and settled back about five lengths off the run and gun leader. Slowly lost ground throughout and finished in a dead heat for seventh.
Lions Grandeur from Red Fox Farms pressed the pace most of the way before tiring and backing up to finish in a dead heat for seventh.
Cherish Lune from Mo Mentum Farm was stretching out for the first time Saturday but unfortunately was unable to show any early interest and looked very much like a horse not enjoying the elongated trip today.
Izzys Brindle also from The Sidley Stud has now gone two turns twice without getting a sniff. Guessing he will be back sprinting in his next performance under silks.
Concession Speech from Noblepark has been a nice story and a really good claim, but the walls caved in today in a head scratching effort. Back to the drawing board.
