Virginia Oaks – [KYO]
Purse $250.000 – For Fillies Three Years Old
1 1/16 Miles – Dirt
Colonial Downs – March 14, 2026
Eight fillies are expected to enter the starting gate on Saturday for the 14th running of the Virginia Oaks, offering fifty Kentucky Oaks points to the winning filly. Alydar Stables has won this stakes in back-to-back years, with last year’s edition marking the race’s first time running on dirt. Nicolette, last year’s victor, went on to be a competitive graded stakes filly and racked up $413.000 in purse money. This sets up as an exciting race, featuring a diverse group that ranges from accomplished stakes winners to lightly raced maidens. Someone has to take a step forward and stamp themselves as a Kentucky Oaks contender. So, let’s take a deep dive into this year’s field:
- Quiet Heat – (The Sidley Stud, J R. Velazquez) Ever since stretching out to two turns, this filly has yet to finish off the board. Quiet Heat broke her maiden at Fairmount Park, rallying from last to score by a length. Last time out in the Suncoast Stakes, she drew the rail in a field of twelve and didn’t have the best of trips. It wasn’t until the top of the stretch that a seam opened up and ultimately finished third. Luck isn’t on her side again, drawing the rail once more, but she may now have the experience to overcome it. Quiet Heat currently sits 32nd in the Kentucky Oaks standings, and a win on Saturday would rocket her up into the top five. My top pick.
- Whispering Leona – (Big Guns Stables, M E. Smith) One of two fillies in this field still seeking her maiden victory. She made her debut at Belterra Park sprinting over a soft turf course, a race that’s easy to toss after finishing eighth and losing ground through the stretch. The connections tried dirt in her next start, where she sat four wide down the backside before angling to the rail at the top of the lane to finish fourth. Now, Whispering Leona faces several new challenges–stretching out to two turns for the first time, adding a shadow roll, and stepping into stakes company. She will need to take a significant step forward to beat this field.
- Do Not Disturb – (Panionios Racing, D E. Centeno) Winner of the Cash Run Stakes two starts back after sprinting against allowance company. She worked out the perfect trip that day, sitting just behind the early speed. However, this New Mexico home-bred ran into trouble last time out in the Sunland Oaks. She trailed the field through the opening half mile before beginning her move around the 3/8 pole. Do Not Disturb showed a decent closing kick down the stretch but was forced eight wide. She draws a better post for this race, and if similar tactics are used again, her best effort will likely depend on a fast pace up front.
- Miss Perfect Devil – (La Canada Racehorses, S X. Bridgmohan) Most of this filly’s two-year-old campaign was spent running on the grass. She broke her maiden at Saratoga by nearly two lengths before making the jump to stakes company. Miss Perfect Devil earned enough points to run in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, where she finished sixth. Her most recent start was the best effort of her career, going wire-to-wire on the dirt against allowance horses. It’s also worth noting that she defeated Pineapple Cupcake that day, who returned to win the China Doll Stakes last weekend. Watch out for this filly.
- Shes Complicated – (TwinTowersRacing, M. Franco) Bought at auction for $79.980, Shes Complicated made her debut at Delta Downs going seven furlongs. It was an even effort, finishing fourth by four lengths. In her next start, she went to Tampa Bay Downs and won by two lengths in impressive fashion. This filly was much the best that day, racing four wide throughout and still swept past the field with ease. This will be her biggest test yet as she attempts a route of ground for the first time. The only question is whether the added distance will be too much.
- Hostile Pentecostal – (Bigchief Stables, T. Gaffalione) It took a little time for this California-bred to figure things out. She broke her maiden last time out at Santa Anita going a mile and a sixteenth. Sitting four wide around the first turn, Hostile Pentecostal began picking off horses one by one approaching the 3/8 pole. At the top of the stretch, she had built too much momentum, and the rest had no answer for her late run. Having already proven herself around two turns, the distance shouldn’t be a concern. The competition gets much deeper in this spot, but her latest effort suggests she may be improving at the right time.
- Western Espresso – (Nakamura Stables, R. Bejarano) The highest earner in this field with $173.770 in purse money and has yet to finish off the board in six starts. She set the pace as the favorite in her most recent outing but couldn’t reach the wire first, finishing third. Her first stakes win came in the Silverbulletday Stakes at Fair Grounds, where she wired a field of 12 fillies. Western Espresso has excelled on the front end and is likely to stick with that approach again. Watch for a showdown on the lead with Miss Perfect Devil.
- River Current – (Mb Stables, L. Dettori) Second maiden in this field and was a $56.780 auction purchase last year. She had two starts as a two-year-old and showed a lot of promise in her second career race at Del Mar. At the quarter pole, she was four lengths clear but got swallowed up in the stretch. Mb Stables then purchased the filly and cut her back in distance. River Current tried sitting off the pace last time out and didn’t fire. Although this California-bred doesn’t have much experience, watch out because her trainer is definitely going to try something new.
