Beverly D Preview: Categorical Destiny Arrives at Colonial in Peak Form

The Beverly D-G2 will be contested on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Colonial Downs as Race #2, a 1 3/16-mile turf event for fillies and mares three years old and upward carrying a purse of $500.000. The race was formerly a Grade I fixture at Arlington Park before moving to Churchill Downs and then Colonial Downs, where Lady Hilltopper and Lille dead-heated in the 2025 edition. Mb Stables has won the Beverly D four times in the history provided and returns with Categorical Destiny. The four-horse field includes three accomplished older mares and Wicked Angelina, the lone three-year-old receiving a five-pound weight allowance.

1. Wicked Angelina — The Sidley Stud / Lopez P — Odds: 5/1

Wicked Angelina makes her turf debut after building a strong record against leading three-year-old fillies on dirt. She has finished in the top three in five of six starts this year, including a third in the Kentucky Oaks-G1, seconds in the Gazelle-G3 and Santa Ysabel-G3, and a third in the Indiana Oaks-G3. Her late-running style has repeatedly carried her into contention at route distances, but she remains winless in nine long-distance starts and must now prove herself on an unfamiliar surface against older mares. The five-pound weight advantage helps, and her graded dirt form gives her an upset chance if she transfers that ability to grass.

2. Mass Influence — Threshold / Sanchez M J — Odds: 10/1

Mass Influence brings extensive experience, with 10 victories from 27 starts and five wins from 12 turf appearances. She won consecutive 1 1/16-mile turf allowances earlier this year at Houston and Belterra Park before finishing sixth at Turf Paradise and third over good turf at Belterra in June. Her strongest recent victories came against allowance and optional claiming competition, leaving her with a substantial class rise into the Beverly D. She is dependable at route distances and owns enough tactical speed to remain involved, but she will need a career-best performance to defeat this group.

3. Voltaire — Threshold / Fresu A — Odds: 7/2

Voltaire is a proven graded-stakes mare with 10 wins, six seconds, and five thirds from 27 starts. She finished third in the Gamely-G1 at Santa Anita in May after holding fifth through the early stages, and earlier placed third in the Wilshire-G3. Her 2025 campaign included a narrow second in the Mabee-G2 and a victory in a one-mile allowance at PRX. She has raced almost exclusively on turf and has been highly productive over route distances. Although she has not won in three starts this season, her Grade I placing and deep grass experience make her a serious win contender.

4. Categorical Destiny — Mb Stables / Lezcano J — Odds: 4/5

Categorical Destiny enters with the strongest recent form in the field, having won two of four starts this year and finished second in the other two. She led throughout the 1 3/8-mile Robert G. Dick Memorial-G3 at Delaware in June and drew clear by two lengths. Before that, she finished second in both the Modesty-G3 at Churchill Downs and the Santa Ana-G3 at Santa Anita, demonstrating effectiveness from 1 1/8 miles through 1 3/8 miles. Her career record includes eight turf victories and more than $1,130.390 in earnings. Proven class, current consistency, and tactical speed make her the horse to beat.

Pace Structure & Race Outlook

Categorical Destiny is the most likely leader after controlling every call in the Robert G. Dick Memorial-G3. Voltaire has also raced prominently, including a Wilshire-G3 effort in which she pressed the pace before briefly taking command. Mass Influence usually settles just behind the leaders, while Wicked Angelina has generally produced her best dirt efforts from farther back.

With only four runners, the early fractions may be controlled rather than demanding. That scenario favors Categorical Destiny, who has already shown that she can establish the pace and continue strongly over distances longer than today’s 1 3/16 miles. Voltaire is the runner most capable of applying pressure or staying close enough to challenge entering the later stages.

Wicked Angelina is likely to trail early in her turf debut and will need the pace to become more contested than expected. Mass Influence should obtain a favorable position behind the principal leaders, but the class difference remains her central obstacle.

Projected Winner

Top Selection: Categorical Destiny

Categorical Destiny receives the call based on her four-race sequence of two wins and two seconds, her recent Grade III victory at 1 3/8 miles, and her established ability against high-level turf competition. She has the tactical advantage in a compact field and appears capable of controlling the race from the outset.

Main Danger: Voltaire

Best Value: Wicked Angelina
