The Canadian Stakes (Grade II) will be contested on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Woodbine, bringing together six fillies and mares for 1 1/16 miles on turf and a purse of $200.00. The race has traditionally been an important turf event for older females, although this year’s renewal is slightly shorter than the 1 1/8-mile distance used throughout much of its history. Past winners include Mo Ki Missy, Musical Treat, Zalinda and Wyldewood. Mo Mentum Farm, trainer/owner of Love, captured the race with Mon Dieu in 2022 and Wyldewood in 2025, while Mb Stables, represented this year by Superface Party, won previous editions with Mentioned Honorably in 2014 and Musical Treat in 2018. The 2026 field is especially interesting because the July 19 Nassau-G2 at Woodbine supplies three of the principals: Rain Rattle, Lucy Heat and Love.
1. Superface Party — Mb Stables / Fresu A — Odds: 7/2
Superface Party brings the deepest collection of high-level turf experience in the field. The five-year-old owns nine victories from 27 turf starts and has earned $1,677.04 on the surface. Earlier this season she won the Very One-G3 over soft turf at 1 3/8 miles and subsequently finished second in the Gamely-G1 at 1 1/8 miles after leading through the opening stages. Her latest appearance came in the Matchmaker-G3 on yielding turf, where she began second, remained close through the first half, dropped to fourth at the third call and finished fifth. Her tactical speed makes her an obvious candidate to be prominent immediately, and returning to firm turf would better resemble several of her strongest efforts. Winning chance: Strong contender.
2. Dianas Fury — D J C Racing Stables / Salles L — Odds: 12/1
Dianas Fury has only two turf appearances, but one produced the most significant victory of her career when she captured the $200.00 Mt Vernon at Saratoga over 1 1/16 miles. In that race she raced second through the first three calls before taking command and winning by a length. Her subsequent effort at the same distance was less productive, as she stayed fourth throughout an allowance event. The positive is that she has already demonstrated she can win at today’s exact distance on turf, although this represents a considerably stronger collection of graded-stakes performers. Winning chance: Outsider with proven distance ability.
3. Ivory Heat — The Sidley Stud / Moran P — Odds: 10/1
Ivory Heat enters in excellent form, having won four of her five turf races and four of six starts in 2026. She has become particularly effective at 1 1/16 miles, winning three times at the distance on turf. Her most recent victory came in the $75.00 Vivacious, where she advanced from fifth to fourth, then second before taking command and winning by a length. She also finished second in the Cincinnati after contesting the pace throughout. The challenge is class: she now faces Grade II competition for the first time against mares with repeated graded-stakes credentials. Her consistency and five-pound weight advantage over most of the older runners nevertheless give her some upset appeal. Winning chance: Live longshot.
4. Love — Mo Mentum Farm / Espinoza V — Odds: 9/2
Love is a seven-time turf winner whose strongest recent performance came when she captured the Wilshire-G3 at one mile in March. She followed that with a third in the Churchill Distaff Turf Mile-G2, fifth in the Gamely-G1 and third in the Robert G. Dick Memorial-G3 before finishing fifth in the Nassau-G2 at Woodbine. In the Nassau she stayed within four lengths of the lead through the opening mile but did not improve her position late. Her established Grade II and Grade III form keeps her squarely in the conversation, and trainer/owner Mo Mentum Farm has already won this race twice, including last year’s edition with Wyldewood. Winning chance: Major contender if she returns to her best spring form.
5. Rain Rattle — Bears Stable / Contreras L — Odds: 5/2
Rain Rattle arrives with perhaps the strongest current form in the field. She won the Nassau-G2 at Woodbine on July 19, settling fourth early before moving to third and then finishing strongest to score by 1 1/4 lengths. Earlier this year she also won the Santa Ana-G3 at 1 1/4 miles after leading at the final two calls and finished third in the Modesty-G3. Her record of five wins from ten turf starts and nine victories from 17 longer-distance races underscores her effectiveness when allowed to settle into a route rhythm. She carries 125 pounds because of her Grade II victory, the highest impost in the field, but her recent Woodbine success makes her one of the horses to beat. Winning chance: Leading contender.
6. Lucy Heat — The Sidley Stud / Hernandez R M — Odds: 2/1
Lucy Heat receives a significant age and weight advantage as one of two three-year-olds in the field, carrying 119 pounds against 123 to 125 for the older mares. She has already won three of five turf starts and has repeatedly shown that 1 1/16 miles suits her. She captured the Turf Distaff at Tampa at the distance, won the Eatontown-G3 at Monmouth, and most recently finished second to Rain Rattle in the Nassau-G2 at Woodbine. In that race Lucy Heat moved from second to the lead at the second call, remained in front at the third call and finished only 1 1/4 lengths behind Rain Rattle. She again receives six pounds from the Nassau winner here and returns to the 1 1/16-mile trip over which she has already recorded multiple victories. Winning chance: Top selection.
Pace Structure & Race Outlook
There is enough forward speed to keep the Canadian Stakes honest. Superface Party has repeatedly raced on or very near the lead in graded company and figures to be one of the first mares involved. Lucy Heat has also shown the ability to take command early, including leading through the middle stages of the Nassau, while Ivory Heat has frequently been first or second during the early portions of her recent races.
That combination could produce a competitive first half rather than an uncontested lead. Rain Rattle appears particularly well suited to such a scenario because she has demonstrated that she can settle just behind the first group before finishing strongly. Love also generally races from a stalking position, while Dianas Fury has shown enough positional speed to stay within reach without necessarily having to contest the lead.
The central matchup is the rematch between Rain Rattle and Lucy Heat. Rain Rattle defeated her at Woodbine in the Nassau, but Lucy Heat was the three-year-old pursuing the pace and now returns to a distance at which she already owns multiple wins while retaining a six-pound weight advantage over Rain Rattle. Superface Party adds another accomplished Grade I-tested presence and could become particularly dangerous if the pace proves less demanding than anticipated.
Projected Winner
Lucy Heat is the selection. Her combination of proven 1 1/16-mile turf form, a Grade III victory at the distance, her recent second in the Nassau-G2, and the continued 119-pound assignment gives her a narrow advantage in a competitive renewal.
Projected Winner: #6 Lucy Heat — 2/1
Main Danger: #5 Rain Rattle — 5/2
Next Threat: #1 Superface Party — 7/2
Value Possibility: #3 Ivory Heat — 10/1
