Frozen Mist Eyes Back-to-Back Glory in KD Ladies Sprint

The KD Ladies Sprint (G1) will be run Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Kentucky Downs, bringing together 11 fillies and mares for 6 1/2 furlongs on turf and a purse of $1,750.00. The race has grown considerably since its early editions and was elevated to Grade II status in 2023 before reaching Grade I this year. This field also features something especially noteworthy: 2025 winner Frozen Mist returns seeking a repeat victory for Maxmillion Farm. Mb Stables won three consecutive editions from 2019 through 2021 and has three representatives this year in Sitting Bulls Champ, Sugar Queen and Stellar Strength.

1 — Painville

Owner/Trainer: Mo Mentum Farm | Probable Jockey: Elliott S
Projected Odds: 10/1

Painville brings a tremendous amount of turf experience into this sprint, with 12 victories from 45 turf starts and lifetime earnings of $5,067.93. The 8-year-old has generally been competing at considerably longer distances, but she enters after winning a one-mile turf stakes at Saratoga on July 17, where she controlled the race throughout and finished a length in front. Earlier this season she was second in the Eatontown (G3) and third in the Wiley (G1), demonstrating that she remains competitive against graded company. The question is the sharp reduction to 6 1/2 furlongs. She has abundant class, but most of her recent success has come in routes rather than turf sprints. Winning chance: legitimate outsider whose class makes her dangerous if she handles the shorter trip.

2 — Itaintovertilitsover

Owner/Trainer: TwinTowersRacing | Probable Jockey: NavMarin J
Projected Odds: 16/1

Itaintovertilitsover remains winless from six starts this year but has finished second three times. Her latest effort may be particularly relevant: she finished second in the 5 1/2-furlong Hummingbird at Ellis Park on good turf after racing close to the pace. Her five turf appearances have produced two seconds, while her previous graded turf efforts include a second in the Sheepshead Bay (G3) at 1 3/8 miles. That versatility is useful, but she steps into a much deeper Grade I sprint here while still seeking her first 2026 victory. Winning chance: possible upset candidate, particularly after the strong sprint effort at Ellis, but this represents a substantial class challenge.

3 — Eighteen Ninety Two

Owner/Trainer: Mo Mentum Farm | Probable Jockey: Alvarado J
Projected Odds: 20/1

Eighteen Ninety Two has been consistently competitive without winning in 2026, finishing third in four of five starts. Much of her recent racing has come on dirt, including a third at 1 1/8 miles at Saratoga in July and another third over six furlongs at Woodbine in May. Her turf record stands at one victory from ten starts, and she was third in the Cardinal over 1 1/8 miles late last season. She therefore brings competitive form but not the same established turf-sprint credentials as several of the leading contenders. Winning chance: needs to produce one of her strongest turf performances to defeat this field.

4 — Frozen Mist

Owner/Trainer: Maxmillion Farm | Probable Jockey: Machado L
Projected Odds: 7/2

The defending champion is one of the horses to beat. Frozen Mist has won 8 of 18 turf starts and has accumulated $2,280.69 in lifetime earnings. She opened her 2026 turf sprint campaign with three consecutive victories, including the Giant’s Causeway (G2) and Sidney (G2), before encountering tougher results in her next three. She was nevertheless third in the Caress (G2) and most recently third in the Hummingbird on August 1. Most importantly, she has already demonstrated that this exact event suits her, having captured the 2025 KD Ladies Sprint for Maxmillion Farm. Winning chance: major contender and my slight preference to successfully defend her title.

5 — Shine To Class

Owner/Trainer: Our Athletes | Probable Jockey: Gutierrez Mario
Projected Odds: 9/2

Shine To Class enters in excellent sprinting form. She owns 6 victories from 13 turf starts and has finished first, second or third in all five of her 2026 appearances. Most recently she finished second by a head in the Caress (G2), following thirds in both the Sidney (G2) and Giant’s Causeway (G2). She also won a six-furlong turf allowance at Santa Anita in January. Unlike several runners turning back from routes, virtually her entire record has been constructed around turf sprinting. Winning chance: one of the strongest and most reliable contenders in the field, with the additional half-furlong the principal new question.

6 — Sitting Bulls Champ

Owner/Trainer: Mb Stables | Probable Jockey: Carmouche K
Projected Odds: 8/1

Few entrants arrive with a stronger 2026 win record than Sitting Bulls Champ, who has won five of six races this year. The significant issue is surface. Her recent success has come on dirt, highlighted by a wire-to-wire victory in the 6 1/2-furlong Great Lady M (G2) on July 4. Turf remains far less established: she has made only three turf starts, finishing second once without winning. Her preparation is intriguing, however, as she worked six furlongs on firm turf at Monmouth on August 13. Winning chance: dangerous because her sprint form is exceptional, but she must transfer that form to turf against accomplished specialists.

7 — Emily

Owner/Trainer: Nakamura Stables | Probable Jockey: Da Silva F H
Projected Odds: 4/1

Emily may be the most dangerous challenger to Frozen Mist. She owns 12 victories from 26 turf starts, and her latest race produced exactly the type of performance wanted entering a Grade I turf sprint: she came from eighth early to capture the Caress (G2) by a head on July 11. That followed a third in the Intercontinental (G2), and she had already won at 5 1/2 furlongs earlier in the season. She has also raced at today’s exact 6 1/2-furlong distance, finishing fifth in a Santa Anita stakes in January. Winning chance: very strong; her late-running style and current graded form make her the primary threat to the defending champion.

8 — Anoushka Titan

Owner/Trainer: Maxmillion Farm | Probable Jockey: Rivera L R
Projected Odds: 7/1

Anoushka Titan gives Maxmillion Farm a formidable second chance alongside Frozen Mist. She has won 6 of 22 turf starts and has repeatedly faced graded competition. Particularly relevant is her April 4 performance in the Monrovia (G3) at today’s 6 1/2-furlong turf distance, where she led through every recorded call before finishing second by a nose. She later finished fourth in the Buena Vista (G2), fifth in another Grade II and third in the Eatontown (G3) before finishing sixth in the Caress. Winning chance: serious contender because she already owns an excellent graded performance at exactly 6 1/2 furlongs.

9 — Sugar Queen

Owner/Trainer: Mb Stables | Probable Jockey: Moran P
Projected Odds: 14/1

Sugar Queen is lightly raced compared with many of these older mares, but her turf record is excellent: three victories and one second from five starts. She enters after winning a 5 1/2-furlong allowance at Saratoga on July 16 and previously won at five furlongs at Fair Grounds. She has yet to face this level of graded competition, however, making the jump into the KD Ladies Sprint particularly demanding. Her established sprint profile is nevertheless a positive. Winning chance: improving runner with upside, but she must demonstrate that her allowance-level success transfers to Grade I company.

10 — Borgin And Burkes

Owner/Trainer: Delta Farms | Probable Jockey: Asmussen K J
Projected Odds: 12/1

Borgin And Burkes has put together a strong overall turf record of 6 wins, 4 seconds and 1 third from 13 starts. She won turf sprints at Tampa, Fair Grounds and Parx earlier this year before stepping into graded company. Her June performance in the Intercontinental (G2) was encouraging, as she advanced from eighth early and finished second by a nose. She then stretched to a mile for the Nassau (G2) and finished fourth. Returning to a sprint should better match the profile that produced most of her victories. Winning chance: appealing longshot with legitimate graded sprint evidence.

11 — Stellar Strength

Owner/Trainer: Mb Stables | Probable Jockey: Husbands M J
Projected Odds: 5/1

Stellar Strength has one of the strongest turf records in the field, with 13 victories from 32 turf starts and lifetime earnings of $2,214.07. She was second in the Sidney (G2) in May and then won the Intercontinental (G2) at Saratoga in June. Her most recent appearance produced a fifth in the Caress (G2), where Emily won and Shine To Class finished second. Her tactical versatility is noteworthy: her past performances show successful races from both prominent and stalking positions. Winning chance: major player capable of rebounding from the Caress and giving Mb Stables another KD Ladies Sprint victory.

Possible Pace Structure

This could develop into a genuinely contested turf sprint. Anoushka Titan has demonstrated the ability to take command immediately at 6 1/2 furlongs, while Sitting Bulls Champ has been extremely effective racing on or near the lead on dirt. Frozen Mist, Shine To Class, Sugar Queen and Stellar Strength have all demonstrated the ability to race close enough to the pace to remain involved from the outset.

That potentially creates an advantageous scenario for Emily, whose Caress victory came after she was eighth at the first two calls before advancing to fifth and ultimately getting up to win. Borgin And Burkes has also demonstrated an ability to make progress from farther back.

The interesting tactical conflict is therefore between Frozen Mist’s ability to secure a favorable forward position and Emily’s proven ability to capitalize when the horses ahead of her begin to tire.

Projected Finish

1st — Frozen Mist — 7/2
2nd — Emily — 4/1
3rd — Shine To Class — 9/2
4th — Stellar Strength — 5/1
5th — Anoushka Titan — 7/1

Predicted Winner — Frozen Mist

Frozen Mist gets the narrow selection to win the 2026 KD Ladies Sprint and become the race’s first repeat winner since Four Left Feet accomplished the feat in 2019–2020. The argument rests on her established turf-sprint record, multiple Grade II victories this season, and—most importantly—her proven ability to win this exact Kentucky Downs race. Emily is the most serious late threat, while Shine To Class and Stellar Strength make this a particularly deep Grade I renewal.
