Seven Is Lucky Looks to Stretch His Winning Streak in KD Turf Cup

The $2,000.000 KD Turf Cup (Grade II) takes center stage at Kentucky Downs on Saturday, September 5, 2026, bringing together 14 older turf runners at 1 1/2 miles. The race carries the BC designation, making it a Breeders Cup points race, and this year’s field has considerable historical interest. Sioux Arrival, winner of the 2025 running for High Voltage, returns to defend his title. Mb Stables has already won this race four times—with Spanish Showboat in 2018, Immoral in 2020, Aerialist in 2022 and Killer Instinct in 2023—and sends out Charlie Jace, Seven Is Lucky and American Generals in search of another trophy. My narrow selection is Seven Is Lucky, whose exceptional 2026 Grade I campaign gives him the strongest current form, although the move to 1 1/2 miles creates an important new test.

1. Dramatic — Family Racing / Ortiz J L — Odds: 20-1

Dramatic enters with seven victories from 19 starts, all on turf, and has won three of six races this year. He comes off a front-running victory in the 1 1/4-mile Niagara at Woodbine on August 8 and also won at 1 3/8 miles at Churchill Downs in May, giving him useful recent evidence that longer turf distances suit him. His record shows six victories from 15 route starts, although this will demand another step up against horses with extensive Grade I and Grade II credentials. His recent one-mile turf works have been strong, including the fastest of seven at Saratoga on August 29. Chance: a legitimate longshot whose recent distance form makes him more interesting than his overall class record might suggest.

2. Charlie Jace — Mb Stables / Saez L — Odds: 6-1

Charlie Jace brings high-level form but an unusual surface profile into the Turf Cup. He has won eight of 22 lifetime starts and three of six this season, with victories in the Ali (G3), Gold Cup (G2) and Suburban (G2), all on dirt. Most recently he finished third in the Whitney (G1). His limited turf record is nevertheless productive—three wins from seven starts—and his overall route record stands at eight wins from 20 starts. Mb Stables has prepared him for the switch with three recent turf works, including a mile on firm turf at Aqueduct. The principal question is not class but whether his established dirt form transfers fully to 1 1/2 miles on grass. Chance: major contender on raw ability, but the surface-and-distance combination makes him less certain than his recent dirt accomplishments suggest.

3. Seven Is Lucky — Mb Stables / Lopez P — Odds: 3-1

Seven Is Lucky has assembled the strongest recent winning record in the field. The 7-year-old has won six of eight races in 2026 and owns 14 victories from 36 lifetime starts, all on turf. His season includes victories in the Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G2), Maker’s Mark Mile (G1), Churchill Downs Turf Classic (G1), Shoemaker Mile (G1), Wise Dan (G2) and, most recently, the Arlington Million (G1) at 1 1/4 miles on August 1. He has demonstrated an ability to win from varying positions rather than relying upon one pace scenario. The obvious issue is that his recent success has been concentrated from one mile through 1 1/4 miles, and 1 1/2 miles asks him to travel farther than the races shown in his current form cycle. Chance: the horse to beat on class and current form, provided his effectiveness carries another quarter-mile.

4. Gatorbyte — Winning Link Stables / Fresu A — Odds: 10-1

Gatorbyte has only two victories from 14 starts but has repeatedly competed well against strong turf opposition, compiling five seconds and four thirds. He finished fourth behind Seven Is Lucky in the Arlington Million (G1) after previously placing third in the Texas Turf and second in the Dinner Party (G3). His running lines show considerably more early speed than several of the deep-closing runners in this field, and he has 13 route starts behind him. The unanswered question is the 1 1/2-mile distance, as his recent races have been shorter. Chance: capable of occupying a favorable position and hanging around for a share, but he must turn consistent competitiveness into a breakthrough performance against several established winners.

5. Salah — Royalty Stables / Prat F — Odds: 15-1

Salah brings formidable dirt credentials but little evidence that turf is his preferred surface. He has earned $1,368.180 from 20 starts and enters off a victory in the Whitney (G1), following an allowance sprint victory at Ellis Park. His three turf starts have produced no wins or placings, including unplaced performances in the Turf Sprint (G2), Maker’s Mark Mile (G1) and Kilroe Mile (G2). The 1 1/2-mile distance also differs markedly from his recent campaign. Chance: dangerous purely because of his class, but he faces significant questions regarding both turf and the extended distance.

6. One Last Punch Line — Saratoga Stud / Rodriguez Jam — Odds: 12-1

One Last Punch Line is one of the runners for whom the 1 1/2-mile distance presents no mystery. He has already competed twice at today’s trip this season, finishing second in the San Luis Rey (G3) and fourth in the McKnight (G3). He later finished second in the Fort Marcy (G3) at 1 1/8 miles and seventh in the Bowling Green (G2) at 1 3/8 miles. His 2026 record lacks a victory, but his experience at this exact distance and previous appearance in the 2025 Breeders Cup Turf give him a foundation that several shorter-distance entrants do not possess. Chance: a credible price horse whose stamina is established, although he needs to improve on his more recent form to win.

7. Propector Gambler — Acber Farms / Elliott S — Odds: 25-1

Propector Gambler arrives with good dirt form but almost no positive turf evidence. He has four victories from 17 starts and has been first or second in three of four appearances this season, including a runner-up finish in the Prairie Meadows Cornhusker (G3) in July. His route record is solid, but his two turf starts have produced no placings. Acber Farms has clearly prepared him for the surface change, including a six-furlong firm-turf work at Kentucky Downs on August 28. Chance: his route ability is real, but winning this Grade II at 1 1/2 miles on turf would require him to establish a new level of grass form.

8. State Cavier — Diablo Diablo / Bejarano R — Odds: 8-1

State Cavier is one of the most accomplished true stayers in the race. The 7-year-old owns 13 turf victories from 41 starts and has already raced twice at 1 1/2 miles this year. He finished second in the Elkhorn (G2) in April and most recently contested the 1 1/2-mile Clement Turf (G1), where he moved to the lead at the third call before finishing fifth. Between those starts he won the United Nations (G2) at 1 3/8 miles on yielding turf. His career includes 10 victories from 33 route starts. Chance: a serious contender because the distance is proven and his recent campaign has been built specifically around longer turf races.

9. Stylish Dime — Maxmillion Farm / Contreras L — Odds: 15-1

Stylish Dime has won only twice in 12 starts but enters with several noteworthy performances against graded company. Most recently he led throughout much of the Arlington Million (G1) before finishing second by a nose to Seven Is Lucky. More importantly for this race, he has extensive 1 1/2-mile experience: second in the Louisville (G3) on yielding turf and fifth in the Belmont Gold Cup (G2), along with a victory at the distance late last year. His current record of two seconds from three 2026 starts underscores that he is competitive even when not winning. Chance: an appealing value contender whose established stamina and near-miss against Seven Is Lucky make him dangerous.

10. Jerk Pork — TwinTowersRacing / Sanchez M J — Odds: 7-1

Jerk Pork has developed into a high-level turf performer this season. He won the Muniz Memorial (G2), finished second in the Churchill Downs Turf Classic (G1), third in the Manhattan (G1), won the Kelso (G3) and then finished third in the Arlington Million (G1). His lifetime turf record stands at four wins, three seconds and six thirds from 19 starts. He generally does his best running from behind the early leaders, which could become useful if the pace is genuine. The issue is distance: his recent races have ranged from one mile to 1 1/4 miles rather than today’s 1 1/2. Chance: one of the strongest class horses in the field and a major threat if he stays the trip.

11. Dangerous Fugitive — Night Rider Stables / Espinoza V — Odds: 6-1

Dangerous Fugitive possesses perhaps the most convincing combination of graded class and proven 1 1/2-mile form. He won the San Luis Rey (G3) at today’s distance in March and the Belmont Gold Cup (G2) at 1 1/2 miles in June. He subsequently finished fourth in the Bowling Green (G2) and sixth in the Clement Turf (G1). Eight of his ten lifetime victories have come on turf, and his route record includes seven victories. A sharp five-furlong work at Kentucky Downs on September 1 completes his preparation. Chance: one of the principal win candidates because no assumption about his ability to stay 1 1/2 miles is required.

12. American Generals — Mb Stables / Zayas E J — Odds: 8-1

American Generals is an exceptionally accomplished turf winner, with 16 victories from 30 turf starts and 11 route wins. He has won three of five races this season, although those victories came at one mile to 1 1/16 miles against allowance company rather than graded stakes. What makes him especially interesting here is his fourth-place finish in the 2025 Breeders Cup Turf (G1) at 1 1/2 miles, establishing that he can handle both the distance and elite competition. He recently transferred to Mb Stables and has worked a mile on turf twice since August 25. Chance: a dangerous entrant whose recent class level understates a career record that includes proven Grade I-caliber 1 1/2-mile form.

13. Duke Of Love — Mo Mentum Farm / Geroux F — Odds: 20-1

Duke Of Love has been productive in 2026 with three victories and two seconds from six starts. He progressed through allowance company before moving into the Fourstardave (G1), where he finished eighth over a mile at Saratoga. His turf record stands at three wins from 12 starts, while his route record is much stronger overall at five wins, six seconds and three thirds from 20 starts. None of the supplied recent races establishes him at 1 1/2 miles, however, and he is stepping from shorter races into one of the deepest fields he has encountered. Chance: improving runner who could outrun his price, but he has both class and distance questions to answer.

14. Sioux Arrival — High Voltage / Centeno D E — Odds: 10-1

The defending KD Turf Cup winner returns attempting to repeat his 2025 victory. Sioux Arrival owns eight wins from 33 turf starts and has accumulated $2,411.580 in lifetime earnings. His current season has not been as dominant as last year, but he was second in the Shoemaker Mile (G1) in May and most recently third in the Read Stakes (G2) at Del Mar. His lifetime route record is seven wins from 30 starts, and last year’s Turf Cup victory supplies the most important piece of evidence: he has already handled Kentucky Downs and this exact 1 1/2-mile assignment successfully. Chance: must improve on his recent form, but dismissing the defending champion at this distance would be risky.

Pace Structure & Race Outlook

The most interesting feature of the race is that several of the strongest contenders do not require the lead. Dramatic has shown front-running ability at longer distances, while Stylish Dime led through the first three calls of the Arlington Million before Seven Is Lucky caught him. American Generals has also won races from prominent positions, and State Cavier moved to the front during both the United Nations and his latest 1 1/2-mile Grade I.

That should provide at least an honest pace rather than allowing one runner complete control.

Behind them, Seven Is Lucky has repeatedly demonstrated that he can settle several lengths from the pace and still win. Jerk Pork is similarly effective from farther back, while Dangerous Fugitive has won at 1 1/2 miles after racing from midpack. Those profiles become important because the final quarter-mile could punish runners asked to establish position too aggressively during the first mile.

The biggest handicapping issue is therefore class versus proven stamina. Seven Is Lucky is the most accomplished current horse but is stretching beyond the distances at which he has dominated. Dangerous Fugitive and State Cavier do not possess his six-win 2026 record, but both have already demonstrated graded-stakes ability at 1 1/2 miles. Stylish Dime and American Generals add additional proven-distance depth, while defending champion Sioux Arrival cannot be discounted on course-and-distance evidence.

Projected Winner

1st — Seven Is Lucky — 3-1
2nd — Dangerous Fugitive — 6-1
3rd — State Cavier — 8-1
4th — Jerk Pork — 7-1
5th — American Generals — 8-1

Projected Winner — Seven Is Lucky

Seven Is Lucky receives the selection, but this is considerably closer than his six-win season might initially suggest. He has won six of eight races in 2026, including four Grade I events, and most recently defeated Stylish Dime, Jerk Pork and Gatorbyte in the Arlington Million. His tactical flexibility is another advantage because he does not need to dictate the race.

The concern is the additional quarter-mile. Dangerous Fugitive is the main danger precisely because he has already won two graded races at 1 1/2 miles this season, while State Cavier owns extensive long-distance turf credentials. If Seven Is Lucky stays the trip, his current class gives him the edge; if the final quarter-mile exposes a stamina limitation, Dangerous Fugitive is the runner most likely to capitalize.

Best Value: American Generals — 8-1. His recent allowance races may cause him to be overlooked, but his 16-for-30 turf record and fourth-place finish in the 2025 Breeders Cup Turf at this exact distance make him particularly interesting.

Live Longshot: Stylish Dime — 15-1. He has already handled 1 1/2 miles successfully and comes directly from a nose defeat to Seven Is Lucky in the Arlington Million.
