Better K P transformed a midpack beginning into a winning surge in the Stable Recovery Stakes, advancing from seventh at the first call to sixth before sweeping into the lead at the third call and staying there through the finish. The Night Rider Stables gelding, ridden by Hernandez R M, went off at 5-1 and completed the 6 1/2 furlongs on fast Parx Racing dirt in 1:14.66.

The inaugural $150.000 Stable Recovery Stakes brought together nine older runners for 6 1/2 furlongs over a fast dirt surface at Parx Racing. Night Rider Stables, serving as owner/trainer, sent out Better K P with Hernandez R M aboard. Missed finished second, Roman Hound took third and Laffin Romantic completed the first four. There were no scratches. The race was completed through fractions of :22.2, :45.2, 1:08.4 and 1:14.3.

The Running — Flow & Calls

First call: Bleed The Freak immediately went to the front, holding a narrow advantage over Roman Hound in second. Missed was third, with Seasmoke fourth and Baytown Compress fifth. Stone Of Tears occupied sixth, while eventual winner Better K P began in seventh, two lengths from the leader. Capitaliste was eighth and Laffin Romantic ninth.

Second call: Bleed The Freak remained in command and Roman Hound continued to apply pressure from second. Seasmoke improved from fourth to third, while Missed slipped from third to fourth. Baytown Compress remained fifth. Better K P began moving forward, advancing from seventh to sixth, with Stone Of Tears dropping to seventh. Laffin Romantic improved to eighth and Capitaliste fell to ninth.

Third call: The entire complexion of the race changed. Better K P accelerated from sixth and swept all the way into first, taking a narrow lead. Missed responded by moving from fourth into second, while Roman Hound remained prominently involved in third. Seasmoke was fourth after racing third at the previous call. Bleed The Freak, who had controlled the opening two calls, dropped from first to fifth. Stone Of Tears was sixth, Baytown Compress seventh, Laffin Romantic eighth and Capitaliste ninth. Better K P’s running line documents the decisive progression from seventh to sixth and then directly into the lead.

Final stage: Better K P sustained the move that had carried him to the front and completed the race in first. Missed remained his closest pursuer and finished second after making his own advance from fourth at the second call. Roman Hound held third after racing among the leaders throughout, producing a considerably stronger result than his 19-1 odds suggested.

Laffin Romantic supplied the strongest late improvement from the back portion of the field, advancing from eighth at the third call to finish fourth. Seasmoke, who had been within the first four at every intermediate call, finished fifth. Bleed The Freak continued to lose position after surrendering the lead and finished sixth.

Stone Of Tears finished seventh after racing sixth or seventh throughout. Baytown Compress, the post-time favorite, was fifth through the opening two calls before dropping to seventh and then finishing eighth. Capitaliste remained toward the rear after the opening call and finished ninth.

Better K P — Produced the defining move of the race. After beginning seventh and improving only one position to sixth at the second call, he accelerated into first at the third call and maintained command through the finish.

Missed — Raced third initially, dropped to fourth at the second call and then made a significant move into second when Better K P took command. He remained second through the finish.

Roman Hound — Ran substantially better than his pre-race market position suggested. He was second at each of the opening two calls, remained close in third at the next call and held third at the finish.
