The Shadwell Turf Mile – Grade I [BC] returns to Keeneland on Saturday, October 3, 2026, bringing 14 three-year-olds and older horses together for one mile on turf and a purse of $1,250.000. This is a Breeders Cup points race. The historical centerpiece is defending champion Seven Is Lucky, who won the 2025 edition for Mb Stables. Mb Stables has been particularly successful in this race, also winning with Hollywood Freak in 2013, Spanish Showboat in 2018, Pxg in 2022 and Prom King(2) in 2023. Seven Is Lucky therefore attempts to give Mb Stables its sixth Shadwell Turf Mile victory since 2013 and its second consecutive running.
The Field
1. Ultimate Champion — Night Rider Stables — Carmouche K
Projected Odds: 5-1
Ultimate Champion enters with three victories from six starts in 2026 and has become considerably more accomplished on turf this season. He won consecutive races at 1 1/16 miles at Saratoga before stepping into the Grade I Woodbine Mile on September 12, where he came from tenth to seventh and then finished second by a nose. That performance is especially pertinent because it came at exactly today’s one-mile distance against Grade I company. Earlier in the season he also won a one-mile allowance at Churchill Downs. His profile suggests a runner comfortable settling behind the early leaders and making his move later. With current Grade I one-mile form and three wins this season, Ultimate Champion has a strong chance to win and belongs among the principal contenders.
2. Ideal Candidate — Aer Stables — Lezcano J
Projected Odds: 18-1
Ideal Candidate is the lone three-year-old in the field and owns one victory from nine lifetime starts. His better 2026 turf efforts include a second in the Grade III Penn Ridge at 1 1/16 miles and thirds in a Churchill Downs one-mile allowance, the Baffle at 6 1/2 furlongs and the Grade III Quick Call at 5 1/2 furlongs. He has not raced since July 19, although his September 24 one-mile turf work at Belmont provides recent preparation for this assignment. His record demonstrates competitiveness on turf, but this represents a substantial test against accomplished older Grade I runners. He has an outside chance to win, with improvement required to defeat the leading older horses.
3. American Nightmare — D J C Racing Stables — Saez L
Projected Odds: 12-1
American Nightmare brings extensive graded-stakes experience and has already been competitive at this level. He finished third in the Grade I Maker’s Mark Mile at Keeneland in April and third again in the Grade I Turf Classic at Churchill Downs over 1 1/8 miles. His latest effort was a ninth in the Grade I Woodbine Mile, the same race in which Ultimate Champion finished second. American Nightmare owns seven victories from 27 starts and has finished in the top three 18 times overall. His Keeneland Grade I performance proves he can compete over this course and distance at the required class level, but his more recent results have been less productive. He has a credible upset chance, particularly if he returns to his spring Keeneland form.
4. Anna Anna Anna — Maxmillion Farm — Jimenez A
Projected Odds: 8-1
Anna Anna Anna has enjoyed a productive season with three victories from seven starts. She won the Grade III Poker at one mile in June and followed with a Grade II victory at 7 1/2 furlongs at Woodbine. Most recently she finished fourth in the Grade III Mint Million at today’s one-mile distance after racing fifth through the middle stages. Her record shows six victories from 20 turf starts, and she has demonstrated the ability to win while positioned behind the early pace. Two graded victories this season give her legitimate credentials, although she now moves into Grade I company. Anna Anna Anna has a meaningful winning chance and is one of the more attractive runners immediately behind the leading choices.
5. Sioux Arrival — High Voltage — Bridgmohan S X
Projected Odds: 10-1
Sioux Arrival is the veteran of the field with 34 lifetime starts, eight victories and earnings of $2,411.580. His 2026 campaign includes a Grade III sprint victory at 6 1/2 furlongs, a narrow second in the Grade I Shoemaker Mile and a victory in the Grade II Wise Dan at 1 1/16 miles. His latest two races came at 1 1/8 and 1 1/2 miles, producing a third in the Grade II Read Stakes before a tenth in the Kentucky Turf Cup. Returning to one mile therefore brings him back toward the distance at which he nearly captured the Shoemaker. His recent workouts include a sharp six-furlong turf move on September 23. Sioux Arrival has a solid chance to win if the return to a mile restores the form he displayed earlier in the season.
6. Good Memories — Mb Stables — Santana R Jr
Projected Odds: 12-1
Good Memories is an accomplished eight-time winner with lifetime earnings of $3,555.360, although much of his overall record has been accumulated in route races. His recent turf campaign includes runner-up finishes at 1 1/16 miles and 1 3/8 miles, while his two one-mile Grade III attempts at Saratoga resulted in fifth and eighth-place finishes. He has shown tactical versatility, racing prominently in some of his stronger performances. Mb Stables’ exceptional history in the Shadwell Turf Mile adds an interesting connection angle, but Good Memories must improve upon his recent one-mile stakes results. He has a secondary winning chance in this deep field.
7. Seven Is Lucky — Mb Stables — Velazquez J R
Projected Odds: 3-1
Seven Is Lucky returns as the defending Shadwell Turf Mile champion and brings the strongest combination of proven Grade I form, current form and one-mile credentials into the race. The six-year-old has won 14 of 37 lifetime starts with earnings of $4,438.260. During 2026 he captured the Grade I Turf Classic at Churchill Downs, the Grade I Shoemaker Mile and the Grade II Wise Dan before winning the Grade I Arlington Million at 1 1/4 miles. He most recently finished third in the Grade II Kentucky Turf Cup at 1 1/2 miles. Cutting back to one mile returns him to the distance of his Shoemaker victory and, more importantly, the same Keeneland event he won last year. Seven Is Lucky has the strongest winning chance in the field and is the projected favorite.
8. Nothing Like It — Nakamura Stables — Curtis B
Projected Odds: 10-1
Nothing Like It comes into the Shadwell Turf Mile after an excellent second in the Grade III Mint Million at Kentucky Downs, advancing from ninth to seventh before finishing runner-up. That followed a series of one-mile turf races in which he was third at Del Mar, second at Louisiana Downs and fourth at Turf Paradise. His lifetime record stands at six victories, five seconds and eight thirds from 31 starts, showing considerable consistency without the same graded-stakes winning record as several of today’s leading contenders. His recent Mint Million performance is nevertheless directly relevant to this one-mile assignment. Nothing Like It has a legitimate chance to win, especially if the pace allows his later-running pattern to become effective.
9. Stylish Dime — Maxmillion Farm — Rivera L R
Projected Odds: 20-1
Stylish Dime has spent much of 2026 competing at considerably longer distances. His best recent performance was a nose defeat in the Grade I Arlington Million at 1 1/4 miles after leading through the first three calls. He subsequently finished sixth in the 1 1/2-mile Kentucky Turf Cup. The four-year-old has only two victories from 13 lifetime starts, but the Arlington Million showed that he can compete effectively against Grade I opposition. The principal question is the substantial cutback to one mile, which creates a very different pace assignment from his recent races. Stylish Dime has an upset chance, but the distance change makes him difficult to place among the primary selections.
10. Excavate — Acber Farms — Pennington F
Projected Odds: 15-1
Excavate is another three-year-old facing older horses and enters after a strong performance in the $1,750.000 Gun Runner at Kentucky Downs. He was 14th through the first two calls, 13th at the third call and then rallied dramatically to finish third at one mile. His earlier campaign was primarily on dirt, including a second in the Grade III Peter Pan and fifth in the Grade III Winn. He has only one victory from 11 lifetime starts, but his Gun Runner performance provides clear evidence that one-mile turf racing suits his closing style. Excavate has a live longshot chance if another contested pace develops and gives him the opportunity to reproduce that late advance.
11. Be A Nice Boy — Maxmillion Farm — Dominguez Jo
Projected Odds: 10-1
Be A Nice Boy has quietly assembled useful one-mile credentials. He finished second by a nose in the Grade I Fourstardave at Saratoga in August after racing third throughout the first three calls. He then finished fifth in the Grade III Mint Million, where Nothing Like It was second and Anna Anna Anna fourth. Earlier in the season he won a five-furlong turf allowance and finished third in a one-mile Churchill Downs allowance won by Ultimate Champion. The Fourstardave is the key performance: it establishes that he can contend at Grade I level over today’s distance. Be A Nice Boy has a genuine winning chance and offers an interesting alternative to the more obvious contenders.
12. Magnum Opus — Mojica Racing — Cabrera D
Projected Odds: 8-1
Magnum Opus arrives after producing a major breakthrough in the Grade III Mint Million. Racing sixth through the opening two calls, he advanced to third and then won by a length at enormous odds. That victory came over today’s one-mile turf distance and against several horses he meets again, including Nothing Like It, Anna Anna Anna, Be A Nice Boy and Jakarta. His overall record of six wins from 14 starts is strong, although much of his earlier success came in substantially easier dirt races. The Mint Million demonstrated that the switch to high-level turf competition was no fluke in that particular race, but Grade I company presents another escalation. On current form, Magnum Opus has a strong chance to contend and a realistic chance to win.
13. Jakarta — Nakamura Stables — Centeno D E
Projected Odds: 18-1
Jakarta is the most experienced horse in the field with 55 lifetime starts and 11 victories, along with earnings of $4,327.200. He won a 1 1/16-mile allowance at Del Mar in July after leading throughout but finished sixth in the Mint Million after again establishing the early lead. Earlier this season he was fourth in the Grade I Maker’s Mark Mile at Keeneland after racing second through the first three calls. That effort confirms his ability to compete over this exact course and distance, while his running lines identify him as one of the horses most likely to contribute to the early pace. Jakarta has an outside but credible winning chance, although maintaining his position through the final stage against this field is the central challenge.
14. King Z — Mb Stables — Lopez P
Projected Odds: 7-1
King Z arrives in particularly good form after winning the Grade II King Edward at one mile at Woodbine on August 15. He settled fifth and sixth early before advancing to fourth and then taking command, demonstrating a stalking pattern well suited to a race containing several horses capable of showing speed. Earlier in the season he won the Grade II Elkhorn at Keeneland over 1 1/2 miles, while his other longer-distance races were less productive. The return to one mile resulted in an immediate Grade II victory, making that latest performance especially significant. King Z has a strong chance to win and gives Mb Stables another serious opportunity alongside Seven Is Lucky.
Pace Structure & Race Outlook
The pace could be genuinely contested without necessarily becoming an all-out speed duel. Jakarta has repeatedly shown the ability to lead, including his recent Mint Million and Del Mar allowance. Stylish Dime led throughout much of the Arlington Million, while Sioux Arrival has also demonstrated front-running ability. Good Memories has races in which he has operated close to the lead.
That should provide opportunities for the tactical runners immediately behind them. Seven Is Lucky has repeatedly succeeded from stalking positions rather than requiring the lead, while King Z, Anna Anna Anna and Be A Nice Boy have also shown the ability to sit behind the first flight and advance.
The deeper closers are particularly interesting if the leaders force one another through the early and middle stages. Ultimate Champion came from tenth to miss the Grade I Woodbine Mile by only a nose, Nothing Like It rallied from ninth to finish second in the Mint Million, and Excavate came from 14th to finish third in the Gun Runner.
The projected advantage goes to Seven Is Lucky. He does not need control of the pace, has already won Grade I races at one mile and beyond during 2026, and returns to the same race he captured in 2025. Ultimate Champion is the primary threat after his nose defeat in the Woodbine Mile, while King Z enters off a Grade II one-mile victory. Magnum Opus deserves considerably more respect after defeating several of these runners in the Mint Million.
Projected Order
1. Seven Is Lucky — 3-1
2. Ultimate Champion — 5-1
3. King Z — 7-1
4. Magnum Opus — 8-1
Projected Winner: Seven Is Lucky — 3-1
Main Danger: Ultimate Champion — 5-1
Best Value: King Z — 7-1
Live Longshot: Excavate — 15-1
