Sprinter To Router There As Altered State in the BC Distaff

BC Distaff – Grade I

1 1/8 Mile Dirt Stake Purse $2,000.00 Filly & Mare 3 Year Olds And Up.

1st        Altered State                             Mb Stables       Velazquez J R 1:48.10

It is funny that in a field with so many great fillies and mares that it was a little too easy to overlook a runner from Mb Stables ridden by the jockey of the year. Coming into this race she had won over half her races including two grade ones this year, one of them the Spinster last time out. So why the longer odds? Well a majority of her wins have been in sprints and she only won her first route race at the age of five last time out. So if we were in real life her stamina may have been questioned, then we had a wide draw and a forward running style, both of which aren’t too great if you have suspect stamina so its no wonder that she didn’t get as much support as you would expect for a runner from the yard.

With a short femur and being five years old and running her 28th race, attempting to win only her second race past a mile it may have been understandable that others took more of the punters money. But of course, this is HRP land where trip only matters when it matters and even the best player in the game can run a champion Distaff winner in sprints for most of her career.

She took a while to establish a lead today which would suggest the lead was preferred but not an urgent instruction, eventually she managed to get comfortable in front and when she did there was to be no catching her. She ran on like a horse that had been routing all her life stopping the clock in a carbon copy time to her Spinster win.

It has only taken 26 races for Mb to realize her best was to be found over the longer trips and as long as that short femur doesn’t bite her in the rump she will be back next year to defend her crown.

Mb Stables won every dirt race except for the dirt mile today solidifying themselves clearly at the top and a long way clear of every player at HRP.

2nd       Woman On The Moon              Arindel               Curtis B             1:48.22

Well, Arindel may not have the size of stable they used to have but boy can they train a race horse! The three year olds have had a torrid time in this years BC races but this one was superb in flying home for second and not many would say she wouldn’t have won had this race had an extra furlong. She disappointed in the KYO and took a while to get to her best in the Cotillion last time and that improvement carried through to today.

The future looks very rosy for the three year old but the one thing the trainer may need to look at is her running style in order to bring a little more consistency to her record.

3rd        Pineapple Puff          Nakamura Stables         Bridgmohan S X           1:48.53

This filly has built a fine record this year but as an on pace runner she has looked a little vulnerable at the end of her races and that was again the case today. Right in the fight she just couldn’t find a turn of foot at the end but after a long tough season she still gave her all. Another year may see her fill her large frame and bring her a bit more strength and I feel she is going to be around for a long time.

4th        Peacestone                    Hunterman Stable      Gaffalione T         1:48.59

She has really hit form this summer and this was a great effort to end her season on. At five she looks like she is going to keep this improvement going into next year and when you look at the fillies and mares she beat today I am sure the trainer will be excited with what is to come.
