BC Turf – Grade I
1 1/2 Mile Dirt Graded Stake Purse $5,000.00 Three-Year-Olds And Upward. At KEE
1st Tom Kha Gai High Voltage 16-1 HRP 6-1 SRF
Tom Kha Gai, at six years old, has only occasionally visited marathons during his lifetime. This year has been a comeback of sorts with the BC Turf being the fourth marathon of the year for him, and he had done well in the other three, hence the fairly low odds for a horse leaving the fourteen hole. But his trainer had an ace up his sleeve. He knew how versatile Tom Kha Gai was and took advantage of his ability to run on the lead and sent him, and that was it. He was second after a quarter and first after that all the way to a handy two-length victory under S X Bridgmohan’s steady ride.
2nd Gold Vault The Sidley Stud 10-1 HRP 4-1 SRF
Full-time marathoner Gold Vault switched back to deep closer for this event and it came close to working except he got too far back, and Tom Kha Gai was just too good. He got all the way back to thirteenth before starting his run for the front and came up two lengths short.
3rd Mistborn Mb Stables *9-2 HRP 9-5 SRF
I went back and forth about whether or not to make Mistborn the favourite here. In fact, at one point I had the article written with him on top as the favourite, but eventually Kegger won me over. There was so much to say for him coming here off two consecutive graded wins. He stalked the pace fairly closely about two lengths back, closed in the leader’s two-length lead but was passed by Gold Vault late, never getting closer than two lengths back.
4th Chagrin Falls Mo Mentum Farm 7-1 HRP 5-1 SRF
Last year’s BC Turf returning winner Chagrin Falls did well at eight years of age to defend his championship. I don’t think he meant to be a deep closer; I just think he was having trouble keeping up early and overcame it to be in the photo for second.
