River City Handicap – (Grade lll)
Purse $300.00 – For Three Year Olds And Upward
1 1/8 Miles – Turf
Churchill Downs – November 7, 2026
Soho Cat made his winning move around the far turn and pulled away late to stamp his authority on the 22nd edition of the River City Handicap! This son of Soho Jackman was not only the heavy favorite, but he also captured his first graded stakes victory after coming up through the claiming ranks earlier this year. He now has lifetime earnings of $419.09, with nine wins and twenty-three starts. Maxmillion Farm sent out three runners and came away with his first River City Handicap victory since the inaugural running in 2003. It also marked a return to the winner’s circle for jockey Luis Saez as he celebrated his second success in the event. The final time of 1:44.55 for the 1 1/8 miles on grass offered an interesting connection to last year’s edition. Soho Cat matched that winning effort down to the hundredth of a second while delivering a decisive victory of his own. With just a month in his new surroundings, this gelding has wasted little time making his presence felt. Maxmillion Farm could have plenty more to look forward to as he gets a better understanding of what brings out Soho Cat’s best. Congratulations!
Winner: Soho Cat – (Maxmillion Farm, L. Saez) Soho Cat broke alertly from the rail and settled into second just off Woog’s early pace. He stayed within half a length of the leader before edging ahead shortly after the opening half-mile. This California-bred gradually increased his advantage around the far turn and entered the stretch with a clear lead of about two lengths. He maintained his momentum through the final furlong as Enigma Code emerged from behind. Soho Cat crossed the wire one length in front to complete a decisive victory under Luis Saez. It’s clear that this five-year-old is going to continue making headlines as we head into 2027. Well done!
Second Place: Enigma Code – (Maxmillion Farm, L J. Luzzi) This Ontario-bred settled in fourth, about three lengths behind the leading trio during the early stages. Enigma Code held that position down the backstretch while Soho Cat and Woog disputed the lead. He shifted to the outside passing the 3/8‘s pole and began making a move as the field straightened for home. The son of Commanding The Storm’s rally carried him past Ged, then Woog to secure second inside the final furlong. Enigma Code continued to finish well but could not reach Soho Cat as he crossed the wire, only a length behind his stablemate. Not a bad effort at all considering he was a $7.50 claim.
Third Place: Woog – (Winning Link Stables, V. Espinoza) Woog showed early speed from the gate and moved to a narrow lead with Soho Cat keeping him company. He maintained a slim advantage through the early stages before his closest pursuer edged ahead passing the five-furlong pole. This gelding continued in second around the far turn but began losing ground as Soho Cat increased the tempo up front. He entered the stretch leading the chase before surrendering second to Enigma Code inside the final furlong. Woog stayed on for third and crossed the wire three lengths behind Soho Cat. I still think the son of Crossing The Rubicon will be a productive claim.
Fourth Place: Mysterious Light – (Maxmillion Farm, I. Castillo) Rounding out the Maxmillion Farm trio, Mysterious Light settled at the rear of the field about five lengths off the pace. He remained saving ground on the rail in fifth down the backstretch as the leaders began to draw away. Still last around the far turn, jockey Isaac Castillo began asking his horse to go as the field approached the quarter pole. They finally entered the stretch with several lengths to make up. This California-bred kept on along the rail and gradually closed the gap on Ged through the final furlong. Mysterious Light moved past that rival late to secure fourth but never reached his two stablemates who finished three lengths ahead.
