Millyon Mama is certainly worth a million roses for trainer Pumpkin Racing as the five year old mare by Meals on Wheels scored her second career graded stake win on Saturday in a three length HRP-rout, in the Bed O Roses Handicap. The win is her eleventh and thirty career starts and puts her over the $700.000 mark in career earnings. This victory marks the first time that Pumpkin Racing has won this stake, and it is the second time in three years that jockey J J Castellano has been aboard the winner. It was an impressive performance, as evidenced by the winning time of 1:21.54, setting a new record for the stake. Congratulations! The most surprising about this result is that she was allowed to go off as third overall betting choice in the five horse field, although she was always our pick to win. Here’s a brief look at the result.

1st- 2- Millyon Mama (2/1)- Our eventual race winner from Pumpkin Racing was ridden well by J J Castellano in the early stages of the race, getting a reasonable distance between the pacesetting Donna Chang and Xanadu Magic Tf. Ran alongside Indiana Sunstar most of the way, but heading into the turn, she fell almost five lengths out of it, and seemed as though Indiana Sunstar was making the winning drive. About midway into the turn, and approaching the exit, Millyon Mama began to move up, and just as the field moved into the top of the stretch, J J Castellano, like a jockey who’s won at BEL many, many times, knew right when to push her forward. She had the perfect lane, and she answered the Castellano’s call with authority! With a furlong and a half to go, everyone by Donna Chang was suddenly a length or more behind her, and Donna Chang was falling into her grasp. The pacesetter could not keep up, and Millyon Mama impressively drove to the wire while pulling away for the win! The time again, a new stake record of 1:21.54. Congratulations again! Millyon Mama is a five year old mare by Meals On Wheels and out of the late Millyon Dollar Baby. She was bred in California as a yearling by Pumpkin Racing, and they have been together throughout!

2nd- 1- Indiana Sunstar (4/1)- Assumed a midpack position for A And I Stables, running side by side with Millyon Mama in the early stages, with a gap of about three lengths to the leaders. She began to briefly pull away from Millyon Mama as the run into the turn began but would be caught and passed by that one by the time they hit the stretch. Her steady advance allowed her to catch Donna Chang just in time to finish off the exacta.

3rd- 3- Donna Chang (2/1)- The Mb Stables entry was the official betting favorite of the race, and she would set the opening fractions in the race, setting the quarter in :23.13 and half mile in :46.07. Maintained a graceful stride over the turn, but when Millyon Mama came calling, Donna Chang was a sitting duck for that one. To her credit, she seemed to hang in there pretty well until the very closing strides, and that is what cost her second.

4th- 6- Danzing Logic (170/1)- The longest shot on the board from Riggins Racing never was able get her few supporters excited, as she went right to the back of the pack. At no point during the seven furlongs did Danzing Logic look to make a move and she simply coasted all the way to the wire. Fortunately for her, Xanadu Magic Tf was abysmal in the final half furlong, and she was able to make a pass.

5th- 5- Xanadu Magic Tf (2/1)- Quick out of the gate for D J C Racing Stables, but would concede the lead to Donna Chang before reaching the turn. During the turn, she increasingly became unable to keep up with Donna Chang’s quick pace and backpedaled in the turn. She had no fight in the stretch, and that last furlong was excruciatingly painful to watch.
