A Sweet Recipe in the China Doll Stakes

China Doll Stakes

Purse $100.000 – For Fillies Three Years Old

One Mile – Turf

Santa Anita Park – March 8, 2026

The Florida-bred Pineapple Cupcake took down the China Doll Stakes under Florent Geroux, stopping the clock for the mile in 1:33.98. Both jockey and trainer earned their first win in this race, and the filly by Spirit Believer increased her earnings to $76.000. This marked her second start on the turf after finishing second in her debut at Penn National. Kudos to Nakamura Stables—this filly has yet to finish worse than second in four career starts. Although it was a short field, other trainers may want to keep an eye on Pineapple Cupcake after this strong showing. The connections placed her perfectly for this well-deserved victory.

Winner: Pineapple Cupcake (Nakamura Stables, F. Geroux) It was really a perfect trip for Pineapple Cupcake, sitting three wide off the whip of the leader into the first turn and down the backside. She noticed they were going too slow at the 5/16 pole and decided to make her move, putting a couple of lengths on the field in the blink of an eye. As the other fillies were trying hard down the stretch, no one was able to make up ground on her as she held a steady one-length cushion. Congratulations on a commanding win!

Second Place: Southfork – (Royalty Stables, J R. Velazquez) For her first time running on the grass, this filly put together a good effort. She didn’t have much speed in the early going and settled on the rail inside Free The Viking. Down the backstretch, Southfork sat in the second flight of horses, hoping for a pace meltdown up front. She started closing at the quarter pole when a seam opened but was too far back early on to catch the winner. Looking at her performance, she could’ve run even better if there had been more speed in front of her.

Third Place: Free The Viking – (La Canada Racehorses, V. Espinoza) This California-bred had an extremely similar trip to Southfork. After having success running on the lead in previous starts, the connections decided to change tactics and come from off the pace. Sitting outside Southfork for the entire race, Free The Viking dispatched her at the quarter pole, trying to make a move. Due to a lack of speed, there was only so much this filly could do down the stretch. Third place was all she was able to get due to maneuvering outside a fading Higgs P at the top of the lane.

Fourth Place: Golden Warrior – (Paradise Stable, M E. Smith) Golden Warrior tried to fill her parents’ shoes by making her turf debut, and it wasn’t a total disappointment. After breaking in front of Free The Viking and Southfork, she tucked in on the rail and stayed there for the whole race. At the 3/8 pole, Golden Warrior started to make her run with all sorts of room because the winner was near the center of the track. She didn’t have much punch down the lane and got passed by two other fillies closing behind her. It was a solid building effort, with plenty to work on for next time.
