After Thrilling Stretch Battle, Supine Wins DMR Oaks

The DMR Oaks (Grade 1)- $300.000 Purse
DMR- For Fillies Three Years Old
One Mile and One Eighth on the Turf
August 17, 2024

Supine has not raced much yet, as the DMR Oaks marked just her fourth career start, as well as being her stake debut. A lot would be asked for her in this Grade 1, but she would show plenty of heart to prevail in a photo with Superface Party. Certainly, now, Supine has made her mark, and for trainer Team 7 Illusions, the best is still probably yet to come for this one. The victory is the second in the DMR Oaks for the trainer, as he also won in 2018 with the late Nancy Broom Moytoy. Mar Garcia is the winning rider, and it is his first such win in the race. The winning time was 1:45.85, which is more of a median such time for the race. Let’s take a look at it now:

(½ Mile- :46.85)- Not surprisingly, Mb Stables- trained Superface Party jumps out to the front right from the gate as she looks to duplicate her performance from the Lake George at SAR last month. The eventual winner of the race, Supine, is not going to let her get too far away as the Team 7 Illusions entry assumes a stalking position. It’s a length and a half to the Mo Mentum Farm stablemates running together, Lakota Wind and Aedesia. Beautiful Eileen (TwinTowersRacing) runs right behind them.

(3/4 Mile- 1:10.36)- Superface Party shows the way down the backstretch and looks comfortable in doing so. Supine continues to run just a length back, and as they begin to move around the final turn, Mar Garcia moves her over a lane to potentially try and make the pass. The field is more spread out behind them, with Lakota Wind pulling away from Aedesia by a length and a half, and the distance is about the same from that one to Beautiful Eileen.

(Top of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Around the turn, and into the stretch, Superface Party is still the leader, but things were not about to come as easily here as they did at SAR. Supine was more than up to the challenge and continued to match her stride early in the turn before ultimately looking to pull up alongside her. At the top of stretch, Supine was within a length and looking good. Running third, Lakota Wind was still in striking range, but would she be able to pick it up a notch to get the top two? Beautiful Eileen and Aedesia had a lot of work to do.

(Finish- 1:45.85)- With a furlong to go, Supine had caught Superface Party and the two of them were set to battle it out all the way to the wire. Both of them looked really good as each showed plenty of desire to try and get the win. When we got to the finish, it was too close to call, and the photo would show it coming down to the head bob. Supine would get the nod over Superface Party on this day for the win! Lakota Wind was about a length back in third, and it was far back to the final two. Beautiful Eileen would top Aedesia.

About The Winner- Supine, trained by Team 7 Illusions and ridden to victory by Mar Garcia, si a three-year-old filly by Supercomplication and is out Finals. She was bred by Team 7 Illusions in Kentucky as a second quarter two-year-old, the only trainer for which she has even known. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her third in four starts and first stake win of any sort. Her career earnings are now $264.600.
