1st Valkyria Alydar Stables Espinoza V

Sometimes things just go right and, on a day, when the stable had three big stakes wins it all started here with another thing going right and that was a fast early pace. I am not sure why the third horse went out so fast, but she really set the race up for the closers and this one was by far the best of them. Eight lengths behind at halfway and still five lengths to make up with a quarter to run she flew home so fast the jockey had trouble pulling her up as she passed the post two lengths clear. This was a hugely impressive Oaks trial for the home bred filly and whilst another day may see a slow pace and an unlucky third, today was her day to shine.

How do you compare a tailed off last in the Demoiselle to a flying second today. Well, you can’t, it’s as simple as that. Taking the trail option, she was flying probably faster than the winner in the end coming from seven lengths back at the quarter mile mark and running home to be second. This was her best effort by a country mile, and we will just have to see how good she is in her next start.

3rd Happy Dancer Nakamura Stables Gallardo A A

This filly had been so successful off the front in her last two that once again she was gunned to the lead in an effort to make it three in a row. Quite why Gallardo went so hard through the first half I don’t know, but she had to go fast to get to the front and with that intention she had to set fast early fractions. She did pretty well to hold on for third but really set the race up for the closers today. In only her fourth start she has plenty of time to strengthen and I think she will be a factor in the lead up to the KYO.

4th Dupixent Night Rider Stables Jaramillo E

When two horses want to be on the lead it can set up a fast pace and in that situation at HRP it is usually the stalker that suffers as much as the leader late in the race. She kept up the pressure and until she ran out of puff and in the end finished a tiring fourth. This was still a strong effort in a race full of talent and maybe in her next race if she can just hold off the pace she could well end up winning in this grade.
