Woodford Turf Classic – Grade I
1 1/8 Mile Turf Stake Purse $500.000 Open 4 Year Olds And Up.
1st Antelope Storm, trained by Grimley
This highly progressive five year old has found a new lease of life after being
gelded and confirmed his win last time was no fluke with a comprehensive win in this.
Starting in a loose stalk he picked up the leaders just after halfway and always looked
in charge strolling home by three lengths. With two triple digit speed figures in a row
i suspect he will turn out to be a serious BC prospect.
2nd Heart Pocket Jeans, trained by Deja Vu Farms
On the speed from a widish gate i spent the whole time waiting for him to weaken
out of contention. But this improving four year old was having none of it and saw off all
challengers right up until the home stretch. Keeping on gamely he held on to a
great second place and could well be picking up a graded stakes soon.
3rd Spotted Cat, trained by Blushing Meadows
Didnt get as far behind as usual and i must admit i was just waiting for his trade mark
turn of foot to take him past the field. He never really picked up though and just whacked
away in the end for third. I do wonder whether he is a true turfer and would like to see
him have another crack at the dirt before his trainer sends him off to the mares.
4th March Madness, trained by La Rosa Stables
This grad old warrior ran his usual honest race running on from too far back to be fourth.
He wasnt very far away from second and is clearly as good as ever and should continue to be
competitive throughout the year.
5th Midway
Showed speed from the outside gate but as usual that spelt disaster and he weakened late.
I think this was a combination of wide gate syndrome and the fact that he is more of a miler.
Either way this was his first disappointing race and he still has a bright future.
6th Tin Lizzie
Taken back from the wide gate he trailed for much of the race but made some late ground in
the end. This wasnt his true form and the outside gate is to blame, i expect a better run
from a better draw next time.
7th Snow Tap
Held a good enough spot early on but was outclassed in the end. I dont think he stayed this
trip which didnt help his cause either.
