I’m not sure if the bigger story in Monday’s TX Derby was the weather or the fact that Australia Wide proved that the once monstrous stable is far from done at HRP. Black And Red splashed home for the narrowest of victories over 30/1 Siri S Isakoff with The Mist another a half length in third. The final time was 1:45.17 on a muddy track.
The eight sophomores loaded up and were away in good order with Siri S Isakoff on the early gas, Black And Red in hot pursuit, The Mist along the rail, Regional Tune giving chase to the top trio, then a group that included Silver Shotgun between horses, Deadly Rivalry along the rail and Becket three wide and Tip The Dancer was slowest away from the gate.
Now moving around the clubhouse turn with six furlongs to run, Black And Red moved up to take the lead by a big more than a length. Siri S Isakoff three wide, The Mist skimming the rail, then a gap back to Regional Tune three wide, Silver Shotgun on his inside and Deadly Rivalry saving ground, Becket four wide with that group and then a gap back to Tip The Dancer, still at the back of the pack.
They made the run down the backside and past the three-eighth’s pole, Black and Red continuing to show the way by two lengths. Sii S Isakoff on the outside of The Mist, then another gap to Regional Tune still three wide, Silver Shotgun on his inside, another length to Deadly Rivalry on the rail, Becket four wide, and Tip The Dancer still trailing the field.
Into the lane and Black And Red still by a length and a half, but drifting out a bit, Siri S Isakoff and The Mist trying to close in and moving in tandem, a gap back to Regional Tune, Silver Shotgun, Becket, Tip The Dancer trying to rally and Deadly Rivalry slammed on the brakes.
Deep stretch and to the wire, Black And Red was really looking for the wire as he was running out of gas like Mark Martin at Talladega… Siri S Isakoff trying to pull the upset, inching up with every stride, The Mist Trying to find more… and as they hit the wire, Black And Red and Siri S Isakoff were too close to call and the PHOTO light went up on the tote board. After viewing the photograph, Black And Red was able to hold on by the slimmest of margins and took the victory. Siri S Isakoff was just a whisker from a major upset, but took the second spot while The Mist continued on to be third. Long-shot Tip The Dancer was a length back in fourth, Regional Tune fifth, Silver Shotgun sixth, Becket seventh and post time favorite Deadly Rivalry was last.
Black And Red is a 3yo bay gelded son of Black Friday – Despacito, by Copper Bottom and he was bred in PA by Tiratzo. He’s changed hands a few times but came to Australia Wide via private purchase for $124.990 and has a pair of seconds prior to today’s win. This is his second victory from nine starts and he has lifetime earnings of $255.430.

Black And Red broke well, just in behind the early lead, moved up around the clubhouse turn to take the lead, clear lead into the lane, all out to the wire while drifting out slightly, hung on. Siri S Isakoff away quickest of all, ceded the lead while tracking the leader, steady late gain, just missed in a game effort. The Mist away well, never far from the pace, could not improve late. Tip The Dancer taken back well off of the lead, rallied down the lane while no threat. Regional Tune gave an even effort, cold not improve position. Silver Shotgun evenly. Becket was not involved. Deadly Rivalry showed little.
