  • Fractious Gets a 1-2 Finish in KY Jockey Club

    The KY Jockey Club will go down as a great race for Fractious, as the trainer not only had a 1-2 finish in the race, but his two horses were clearly the class of the field in the race. We didn’t have either one of them on top, but both were among our picks, making it quite a surprise that each of them went off with double digit odds.

  • Seabiscuit Handicap Draws a Field of Ten

    This Saturday at DMR, the top race of the day will be the 20th running of the Seabiscuit Handicap, and there will be ten horses heading to post to try and win a race that has seen the likes of Barbarino and Five Spirits win in the past. The race had a higher purse back in the day, so it may have drawn stronger fields overall.

    Like its companion race, the KY Jockey Club, the Golden Rod provides points for the big race that will be held here over the first weekend in May. That, of course, is the KYO, but as we saw with last year’s KY Jockey Club, these races are really more about winning a nice race in November with a talented juvenile for a generous purse.

    With the BC Juvenile come and gone, the next race to officially be targeted for two year olds is the KYD, as even though it can seem so far away right now, points have been awarded for the race since September. The starting gate will be full for this race, as points gained now could mean all the difference between finishing 20th or 21st on the KYD leaderboard down the road.

    Since arriving with Spb Racing through a $7.500 claim, Savanna had won back to back races, first being an allowance and then an ungraded stake. The filly would look to take another step forward as she took on graded company for the first time in the Chilukki.

  • Time to Appreciate the Chilukki Field

    There weren’t many horses that decided to take a shot at the Grade 3 Chilukki at CD, even with the race’s generous $300.000 purse. Just five will be heading to the starting gate for this, the nineteenth running of the race. Don’t worry, though, because it is not short on quality!

  • Temperature Brings the Heat in The Pebbles

    It was back to the grass for Temperature, a horse that Riggins Racing spent $375.000 on early in the year and turned in decent results, but the expectations were likely higher. She had been running well on the tturf, but the trainer took a couple cracks at the main track, and the results were similar: good, but not great.

    The Lake Ontario Stakes took place on Friday at WO, sending a field of five a little more than a mile around the main track. On paper, this was not the most exciting of races, as it lacked a headliner and consisted of horses that have, with one exception, struggled to win over their careers.

    This Saturday at AQU, ten three year old fillies will head to the starting for the 20th running of the Pebbles, a Grade 3 race that is held on the turf. It marks that second time that the race has been run at the Big A, as it had been at BEL up until last year.

The Lake Ontario Stakes will not be a race that makes people forget about the BC, but it’s happening on Friday and offers a decent purse so we can still take a look at it.
