This race has not always had the prestige as it now does, beginning as an ungraded race for a $150.000 purse. That is something that would change quickly, and it would officially become a graded race in 2013.

None will be bigger than the two that finish off the stakes portion of the card, and here we will take a look at one of them: the 16th running of the Cotillion Stakes. It may not have had a graded designation, but the $300.000 purse offered for the Open Mind made it a nice part of a busy day at CD. The race is a sprint for fillies and mares, and it would be won by the most experienced horse amongst them.

Be Yourself Survives at Wire to Win Pocahontas
It may or may not be a glimpse into the KYO trail for next year, but Saturday at CD, we saw a group of two year old fillies who are showing plenty of potential early in the careers go at in the Pocahontas. None of them were able to catch the frontrunner of the race, Be Yourself, as the the post time favorite got out on the lead early and stayed there to score the big win.

The comeback of Riggins Racing to high level racing and success in them continued on Saturday in the WO Mile, as the trainer can now celebrate his latest BC runner. Back in February, it took only $20.000 for Riggins to acquire Grand Opening in private sales, and it is a purchase that has paid off, and then some.

Thinking Outside The Box For The WO Mile
This Saturday at WO, the third of four “win and you’re in” races for the BC Mile will be taking place. As if that was not enough incentive for trainers to head north of the border, the WO Mile also offers a $1,000.000 purse to be divided up amongst its top four finishers. This has led to the starting gate being mostly full, with twelve talented runners taking their chance at cashing in on the rewards that this race offers.

Last month at CNL, Killer Instinct would make his turf debut in the Grade 1 AP Million in what was his 24th career start. That’s a tough way to do it, but the Fire N Fury colt would open eyes when he nearly pulled it off before settling for second in a photo finish.
