NY Stallion Stakes- Bid ($150.000 Purse)
BEL- For Three Year Olds Foaled in NY
Seven Furlongs on the Turf
June 19, 2021
The NY Stallion Stakes continues on Saturday with the 14th running of the Bid Stakes, sending three year olds seven furlongs over the turf course. Like its companion event. The Joy, the Bid initially appeared on the schedule as a mile long dirt race, but would only be that way for one year. This has been a good race for D J C Racing Stables in the past, as he has three wins, but will not have a horse in the field to possibly add to that total. Keanu Storm won the Bid last year, doing so for Arindel. The gelding is still active, but was auctioned off very cheaply this March and has not been back to the track. This year, Arindel will have three in the race, and they will be taking up the three spots on the outside of the gate. We have eight in the field, and now let’s meet them!
#1- Acute (Night Mare Racing, ridden by I Ortiz Jr)- Made his turf debut last month right here over seven furlongs, and ran very well, earning a 93 SRF in his second place effort. That performance gets the trainer confident that he is to run here. The biggest question is going to be how much the weight impacts him, as he only needed to carry 117 pounds in that race. If he handles that fine, then he should contend here.
#2- Fearisque (Maxmillion Farm, ridden by L Saez)- The trainer picked this one up in the December auction for $22.520, and has been very patient with him, running him just two times. Both of those races ended in wins. The most recent one, occurring three weeks ago, was over this distance on yielding turf right here at BEL. Looks like it’s time for the gelding to be unleashed to see what he can do in this division. And we all know the trainer knows how to develop turf stars.
#3- Instigator (Spankys Barn, ridden by J R Velazquez)- This one also changed hands in December, going through the auction and then a private sale in a span of four days before Spankys Barn ended up with him. The trainer has also been patient, running his gelding just twice. In his last start, he broke his maiden at SA over six and a half furlongs, and hopes to build on that with another strong effort in the Bid.
#4- Whatchagonnado (Fractious, ridden by J Lezcano)- The State Police gelding has three wins in his seven starts, highlighted by taking the $75.000 Logan Stakes at SA a few days after the two closest to his inside were in the auction ring. He’s had two graded attempts for his career, and they could be looked at in different ways. One, could be the disappointing finish, but the other being that they were each one of our classic cluster finishes. Should be a good distance for him.
#5- All Lights Out (La Canada Racehorses, ridden by J L Ortiz)- He ran in that same allowance as Fearisque did last month, the one his rival won on yielding turf. All Lights Out was not as much of a factor there, finishing fourth of four. His prior two starts were also on off tracks, and he ran second in both of them, and his lone win was also on an off track. In fact, you have to wonder if All Lights Out will be confused by conditions if it is not wet. 24% chance of rain on Saturday. It’d be 12% probably, but they saw that All Lights Out was running, so doubled it.
#6- The Great Goodbye (Arindel, ridden by D Davis)- Moving to the Arindel portion of the starting gate now, this gelding will be looking for his fourth straight win. About three weeks ago, he ran here in the Paradise Creek, also at seven furlongs on the grass, and got the win. It may have taken the trainer a little longer to figure this out than he would have liked, but it seems as though he has always been high on him, even if he did put him for a $35.000 tag a couple races ago. He’s the best of the three that the trainer brings.
#7- Andes (Arindel, ridden by J Alvarado)- Virtual UBS Arena right next door will be rocking for Great Islanders next year, but now this Great Islander gelding, who in my mind is really named Anders, looks for his third win. His last two starts have really not been pretty, finishing a distant sixth and ninth, but this is not the PEN Mile or the Grade 2 American Turf. Plus, he comes “home” for this, so all of that should help. I want to root for him, but sadly, I can’t pick him.
#8- Tiberian (Arindel, ridden by E Cancel)- This one ran in the same optional claimer last month that Acute was in, he finished one position behind that rival he sees again here. It was a good race for Tiberian as well, earning him a 93 SRF, but the same question with Acute applies to him, and that is whether or not the added weight will make much of an impact. For Tiberian, that’s six pounds. Don’t know if I am completely sold on him yet.
Prediction: 2-6-4-5
