RP Oaks (Grade 3)- $200.000 Purse
RP- For Fillies Three Years Old
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Dirt
September 26, 2021
Bay Of Indy was picked up in private sales in August and entered into a race almost immediately. She ran decently in that race, but now with a little more time together with new trainer Broken Spoke Stables, she was ready to take the next step. Not many believed in her, as she went off at odds of 61/1, the second longest shot on the board. The Chai Bay filly ran a great race in the RP Oaks, winning by three lengths for the biggest win of her career. It is the first time that Broken Spoke Stables has won this race, and that is also true for jockey M Franco. Congratulations to them! The time of the race was 1:41.24, the quickest of the five runnings of the race at this distance. Let’s take a look!
(¼ Mile- :23.18)- The early leader of the race is Arindel’s Tall And Fast, who jumps out to a two length lead over Glamorous Life, who is trained by Nakamura Stables, and the post time favorite, Power Walk out of Mb Stables. They would eventually be joined by Soviet Sensation, the stablemate to Power Walk as that one goes in the third lane. Tucked in right behind these three is our eventual winner, Bay Of Indy, for Broken Spoke Stables, and she has Slim Trim And Grim (Wood Duck Stables) to her outside. The trailers would be the huge longshot, Geek Time (Nakamura Stables), and then Lady Narloff (TwinTowersRacing).
(½ Mile- :46.85)- Soviet Sensation would not be satisfied with just joining the stalkers of the race, but would advance further to pull up alongside Tall And Fast at the front, and then poke a neck in front for the lead after a half mile. Tall And Fast stays in the second spot, and neither Glamorous Life or Power Walk alter their game plan to account for that move. Bay Of Indy continues to run in the middle of the field, running about four lengths off the lead and waiting for her time to strike. Slim Trim And Grim stays beside her with Geek Time and Lady Narloff still at the back.
(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- As the field moves around the turn, Soviet Sensation pulls away from Tall And Fast, and it soon becomes apparent that Tall And Fast is done for the day. Others need to account for her dropping back, and Power Walk moves to her outside to get ready to move to the front. She’s the post time favorite, so the one most people were watching. However, doing the same thing, and doing it a little better would be the longshot Bay Of Indy, who needs to move forward now from her midpack position. She moved to the outside of Power Walk but impressively passes her as it was her that ran in the KYD a few months ago. Almost in a blink of an eye, she is up to second, and within a length and a half of the other Mb Stables horse. Elsewhere, Slim Trim And Grim moved to the far outside and made good progress. Glamorous Life was unable to advance. Further back, Lady Narloff made up some ground and Geek Time stayed at the back.
(Finish- 1:41.24)- With a furlong to go, Bay Of Indy would blow by Soviet Sensation and quickly begin to open up on her. There would be no new challengers coming from behind, so at that point, Broken Spoke Stables could begin celebrating the win. And a nice win it was, as Bay Of Indy went on to win by three lengths. Slim Trim And Grim’s outside path gets her second and Soviet Sensation ends up hanging on for third over the late running Lady Narloff. Power Walk disappoints greatly by finishing fifth, ahead of only Glamorous Life, Tall And Fast and Geek Time.
About The Winner- Bay Of Indy, trained by Broken Spoke Stables and ridden to victory by M Franco, is a three year old filly by Chai Bay, and is out of So Indy. She was bred as a third quarter two year old by Serenity Stables in California, and acquired by Broken Spoke Stables in private sales this August for $110.000. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her third in nine starts, her second stake in and first graded win. Her career earnings are now $232.160.
