Bottomless Mimosas Gets the Win in The Athenia

The Athenia ($150.000 Purse)
AQU- For Fillies and Mares Three Years Old and Upward
One Mile and One Eighth on the Inner Turf
October 19, 2024

There was plenty of reason to like Bottomless Mimosas in the Athenia, and that’s why we made her our pick. But could this be the race where she could put an end to her streak of finishing second while doing one better? Indeed, she would, as the finally picked up that elusive first stake win. She is trained by Mb Stables, and this is the second time that the trainer has won this race. His previous Athenia trophy came in 2017 with Deserves It. K Carmouche was aboard for his first win in the stake. Congratulations to them! The winning race time was 1:45.72, which is the quickest of the three editions that the time could fairly be compared to. Let’s take a look at it now:

(½ Mile- :47.01)- Reorganize checks out to the lead for Czech Out Farms and holds a length advantage down the frontstretch and into the clubhouse turn. Our eventual winner, Bottomless Mimosas is second for Mb Stables, and after running side by side with Mo Mentum’s Southern Wolf for a little while, she pulls a length ahead of that one. Southern Wolf is still comfortably ahead of Emily (Nakamura Stables) and Spoon Flip (D J C Racing Stables), who run in the middle of the field. Further back, Horing Gal (Night Rider Stables) hopes to not be outclassed again, then Quick Twitch (Williams9) at the rear of the field.

(3/4 Mile- 1:10.56)- Reorganize is still the leader down the backstretch, and she holds that length lead still. Bottomless Mimosas is second, with K Carmouche seeming a little unsure during the backstretch portion as to whether or not to ride the rail or position his filly to the outside of Reorganize. Southern Wolf is third but is falling into the clutches of both Emily and Spoon Flip, who are preparing to move along the outside. A big gap of at least four was then present to Horing Gal and Quick Twitch.

(Top of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- Making their way around the turn, Bottomless Mimosas methodically reels in Reorganize, and there is not much between them as we enter the stretch. However, there is a gap of about two lengths to the next three, Southern Wolf, Emily, and Spoon Fed, who are running alongside one another. Further back, Quick Twitch showed some signs of life, but Horing Gal once again was over her head.

(Finish- 1:45.72)- Bottomless Mimosas would take the lead with a furlong to go and would use the remaining portion of the race to inch away from Reorganize to go on and win the race by a length. There would be no one else coming from further back, so once that pass was made, the race was hers! Reorganize hangs on for second narrowly over Spoon Flip and Emily with Southern Wolf fading in the stretch. Quick Twitch never made a move, and for the third time in four races, Horing Gal loses by double digits.

About The Winner- Bottomless Mimosas, trained by Mb Stables, and ridden by K Carmouche, is a three-year-old filly by Fire N Fury, and is out of Early Mornings. She was bred in Ontario as a first quarter two-year-old by Mb Stables, and they have been together throughout. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her third in 14 starts, and first stake win. Her career earnings are now $339.200.
