City Of Hope Mile (Grade 2)- $200.000 Purse
SA- For Three Year Olds and Upward
One Mile on the Turf
September 30, 2023
When looking at Bronze Bomber, the first thing that will grab one’s attention is his remarkable consistency. His last four races have earned him an SRF of exactly 101, and while they have not all been wins, he has been very competitive in some of the bigger races that this division has to offer. In the City Of Hope Mile, he would run well again, picking up the win, and whether or not it earns another 101, it won’t change the fact that his trainer, Threshold, has a star on his hands. This is the first win in the City Of Hope Mile for both Threshold and jockey R A Vazquez. Congratulations to them! Congratulations also to Worst Case Scenario, as his foals ended up winning three straight here at SA, taking the Eddie D Stakes (Fiddlestyck) and SA Sprint Championship (On Schedule) before this win with Bronze Bomber. Not too shabby for a sire that has public breeding services available for the fourth quarter for just $2.000. (Two last minute third quarter services were just taken in light of these SA results). The time of Bronze Bomber’s win was 1:32.50, the second quickest in the race’s history. Let’s take a look at it!
(1/4 Mile- :23.27)- Heading down the front stretch and moving into the opening turn, the Mb Stables- trained Aerialist will take the top spot and lead by nearly a length. There are three that are running side by side by side that are keeping Aerialist from getting to the rail for the turn, and among them is our eventual winner (as well as our pick to win) from Threshold, Bronze Bomber. He is technically credited with running fourth here, as Captain Cajones (Night Rider Stables), has a head in front of the group, and Love Is War (Mb Stables) takes third. America First (TwinTowersRacing) is fifth while running in the lane behind Aerialist, and to his inside are Atomic Eclipse (Spankys Barn) and Moonlight Special (Allinthegate). After two lengths, Sleepy Sunday (High Voltage) and Calling All Angels (D J C Racing Stables) are at the back.
(1/2 Mile- :46.57)- We got ourselves a nice battle going on at the front, as they are four wide, just heads apart coming down the backstretch. Bronze Bomber is right in the thick of this, along with Love Is War, Aerialist, and Captain Cajones. America First and Atomic Eclipse continue to stalk them while Moonlight Special tries to keep in touch with them. Calling All Angels and Sleepy Sunday may be getting left behind very early on here.
(Top of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Approaching the end of the backstretch, Bronze Bomber began to inch ahead of the three that he had been running with, and he would only continue to push further in front while within the turn. He handled the turn exceptionally well, and by the time he entered the top of the stretch, he was over a length in front. Aerialist and Love Is War were still side by side for second, but Captain Cajones was losing a little bit of ground to them. Meanwhile Atomic Eclipse looked to make a four wide run as America First started to tire it out. Moonlight Special was next but didn’t have a lane to work with quite yet. At the back, Calling All Angels and Sleepy Sunday had become also-rans.
(Finish- 1:32.50)- There would be no catching Bronze Bomber, as he had plenty left in the tank to cruise to win by a length and a half, and it will be exciting to watch him as he continues this hot stretch Atomic Eclipse’s outside trip got him second, with Love Is War taking third over Moonlight Special. Aerialist dropped to fifth, but beats Captain Cajones, America First, Calling All Angels and Sleepy Sunday.
About The Winner- Bronze Bomber, trained by Threshold and ridden to victory by R A Vazquez, is a six-year-old gelding by Worst Case Scenario, who sires three straight graded winners today at SA. He is out of Isolated and was bred by Mb Stables in Ontario as a second quarter two-year-old. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his eighth in 25 starts, his third stake win and second graded win. His career earnings are now $606.090.
