NY Stallion Stakes- Joy ($150.000 Purse)
BEL- For Fillies Three Years Old Foaled in NY
Seven Furlongs on the Turf
June 19, 2021
A field of five will be going to the starting gate for the fifteenth running of the Joy, which is part of the NY Stallion Stakes. When it first appeared on the calendar, it was run on the dirt, but would be moved to the turf in 2009. The $150.000 purse was first reached in 2019, and is the highest that the race has been run for. Last year, Beggars Benison hit the wire first, doing so for Team 7 Illusions. That filly has since been retired, and through the wonders of virtual breeding, she has already produced three foals! Let’s look at this field and see if there are any major stars in the making here, or if there is anyone that will have three foals by this time next year.
#1- Prairie Rose (Allinthegate, ridden by L Saez)- Will make her stake debut after winning two of her last three races. She’s earned this shot, and this is a great spot for her to pick up her level of competition as she looked really good at this distance in her last start. However, how much of a difference will it make that she carried eight fewer pounds in that race than she will here. We’ll find out!
#2- Twisted Express (Mb Stables, ridden by J Lezcano)- She ran here last month in the Grade 3 Soaring Softly, which is also seven furlongs on the turf. It was a narrow defeat for her, as she finished second in a close photo. That’s been a common spot for her to finish, as she has been the runner up in six of twelve starts, with only one victory. I look for that trend to continue here.
#3- Ruffians Legacy (Fractious, ridden by M Franco)- Showed enough promise as a two year old to get an entry in the Grade 1 Frizette, but ended up seventh that day. For her career, she has been inconsistent, and has not stepped up when the trainer has tried to run her in a big race. The filly has done better in the smaller ungraded stakes, which this would classify as. Does not have much experience on the grass.
#4- Starship Qanon (TwinTowersRacing, ridden by J R Velazquez)- After winning an allowance in her last start, her third victory in seven career starts, the filly is getting a chance to make her stake debut. She’s earned that, but with it also being her turf debut, things seem more up in the air for her, but maybe that is fitting. Did put out a good turf work here earlier in the week.
#5- Buckingham Palace (Smokey Stover, ridden by D Davis)- This has been a very reliable filly, finishing either first or second in all of her five career starts. Her bloodlines are great, being by State Police, but also out of Jinxed Queen, who also had a great career. Made her stake debut three weeks ago down at LS, and was second in the OB Distaff. Don’t have to worry about her running on the grass, as that is all she has done for her career. Should be a top choice for the race.
Prediction: 5-2-1-3
