8 SA CA Cup Derby
$175.000 1 1/16th Mile Dirt 3yo Foaled in CA 121lbs +penalties
As one year ends, another starts, and the same can be said for endless string of “Derby” races… it is CalCup Day, and we get a field of eight freshly made sophomores set to go a mile and a sixteenth on the main oval in the CA Cup Derby. It’s an interesting group as we only have one horse that has done more than break its maiden, so that tells you this is a wide-open race. I’m with The Card and will go to the rail and give Golic the slight edge to win today. He broke maiden at CD just before Thanksgiving, and I think he has the speed to control things today. Steady works over the track tells me they were aiming at this race, so let’s see if the play plays out. We disagree on the minor picks, as I am looking at Vault to be a factor today… that one changing hands after a tiring tenth in the Champagne (GI) at AQU… the vet stopped by to change his outlook on life, and he shows some nice local works, leading up to this. I think the barn has this one ready to run big.
