GIII – CT Oaks
$300.000 Graded Stake 7 Furlongs on Dirt for Filly Three Year Olds
2016 Champ: Fleeting Affair
The CT Oaks has been dominated by Mb Stables over the past three years winning it three straight years. This year he has another great shot with three entries in the race. The field is a solid one though with a few nice fillies looking to take that title away from the stable of Mb.
1- Sharp Terms (Trained by Mb Stables, Ridden by Bocachica A)
The first of three Mb entries is Sharp Terms. She comes into the race on a two race win streak. She has yet to put it together in a big race such as this and will be going up against a handful of fillies that have already have that big win under their belt. That lack of big race experience could hurt this one but she looks like she will at some point break through and win one of these big ones.
2- Fangs (Trained by John Henry, Ridden by Boulanger G)
The connections of Fangs could be seen doing the rain dance all week long in hopes of some precipitation at CT for the race but they couldn’t get it. Her most recent win was in the mud at SAR in the GI Test. Without the rain she is still an outstanding filly sitting in the perfect post for the race. She will be up near the lead early on waiting for her opening as they turn for home.
3- High Precious (Trained by Eastern Equine, Ridden by Husbands P)
After a couple loses in a row High Precious will go back to seven furlongs for the first time since winning the GII Santa Ynez Stakes at SA back in January. This is a lightly raced filly this year with only three starts so she should be coming into the race fresh. She will likely be high odds but could be one to watch if things fall apart for the top contenders in the race.
4- General Flecha (Trained by Mb Stables, Ridden by Gaffalione T)
Three straight wins coming into the race is never a bad thing. She has been impressive in PA bred races and will move back into open company for this one. It will be her first attempt at the seven furlong distance. The race has a few seven furlong specialists in the field so they may have the upper hand on this one.
5- Threat (Trained by D J C Racing Stables, Ridden by Centeno D E)
The most experienced horse in the race with twelve career starts and over $700.000 in earnings. She had struggled early in 2017 to find the success she had as a two year old but as of late was able to find her stride again reeling off two straight wins coming into the race. The owner has found something she likes as he added lasix and bute for the last couple starts and it seems to of made a world of difference for this filly.
6- Phun Stick (Trained by Axeman, Ridden by Ocasio L M)
The likely post time favorite will be Phun Stick who comes into the race off back to back victories, her most recent being her most impressive of her young career. On that day she went wire to wire in the GIII Seaway Stakes at WO. That race was run at the same seven furlong distance as this one. It was one of the quicker run races by a filly all year long and sets her up for another big run.
7- Where To Find Me (Trained by Mb Stables, Ridden by Van Dyke D)
The only one in the race with better times at the seven furlong distance this year is this one. She drew the outside post which can be tricky at times but will be looking for the one to her inside to set a fast pace to run at late and will be the fastest horse down the stretch. The question is will she be able to close in time to get Phun Stick at the wire. She is four for five in her young career and has shown a real love for the seven furlong distance going three for three already.
