At nearly 20-1, Broken Spoke Stables’ Carneyman ran gamely through the stretch to get up to a 3/4 length win in the thirteenth running of the $2,000.000 Grade I BC Juvenile, a race that gives us our first inkling of which horses will be vying for honors at the twin spires in May. With the second-fastest time for the 1 1/16 mile test, he joined the ranks of such as Timepiece and Commander Phil and last year’s winner, Divine And Broke, which ran the fastest time in race history. LionKing Stables’ Phooeys Ideal finished second a neck in front of Nakamura Stables’ favoured Symboli Rudolf.
Taking advantage of his experience at the distance of this race, Carneyman stalked the leaders from the rail throughout the race, moving for the lead down the lane and was drawing off as they crossed the finish line.
Phooeys Ideal was far back throughout the race, seemed hopelessly outrun turning for home, but exploded down the finishing with a dramatic rush for the place.
Symboli Rudolf broke sharply on top, set the pace to the stretch, was overtaken coming down the lane and continued on with courage to finish third a length back.
Downwind Stables’ Water Mummy was outrun at every pole in the race, coming home last of fourteen, when he rallied with a tremendous rush to come within a length of the winner.
Gdp Inc’s Black Mach One forced the pace to the stretch and held on gamely for a dead heat for fifth.
Sanny Village’s Double Jolly King was outrun to the stretch and closed well for the other fifth.
Blushing Meadows’ Atomic Titty Twister closed a bit to join the one length back gang.
Jerry Garcia Racing’s Ned Isakoff raced evenly to finish a length back.
Mb Stables’ Grandeur showed some speed before dropping out.
Serenity Stables’ Pentagon forced the early pace and tired.
The others were never a factor.
