The Withers – Grade III [KYD]
1 1/8 Mile Dirt Stake Purse $250.000 Open 3 Year Olds.
1st Chai Bay Serenity Stables Beschizza A
Things looked pretty much over for this one as just an average start saw him carted back further and further until he ended up last with just a half mile to go. From there things had to go his way and they certainly did as Devil Snake did the hard work in front of him bullying horses out of the way to create a gap for himself which Chai Mission followed and eventually burst through for a last gasp win. How things have changed for this one, an eight race maiden as a two year old and now two wins from two as a three year old and a KYD contender.
2nd Devil Snake Joshua Stables Cancel E
Like teh winner he got gradually worse as the leaders closed up and was way near the back for much of the race although looked to be going well. You have to feel for him a bit as he did all the heavy work in making the gaps that the eventual winner breezed through to beat hm. This was a good effort from a horse with very little experience and time will tell if he can improve enough to become a TC contender.
3rd Blowberg Estero Farms Chirinos R
Had a poor start and was rousted up to make quick ground in the first quarter to sit in a loose stalk. He was wide all the way but stuck on really well to hold third after leading with a furlong to run. He may not be the best three year old in the stable but he has given himself another chance to get into the KYD with this brave effort.
4th Chrystal Believer Maxmillion Farm Bocachica A
The danger for him with the one box was always that he would get boxed in and thats exactly what happened. After being repeatedly blocked from making a challenge he was forced wide to get clear air but when he finally got it he failed to quicken and ended up a battling fourth just a length off the winner. He will get another chance before May.
