Bowling Green – Grade II (P1)
1 3/8 Mile Inner Turf Stake Purse $250.000 Open 4 Year Olds And Up.
Well, there was a mystery before the off in today’s race and that mystery was the odds monkeys who installed Anemoi as the favorite. Not that he isn’t a decent horse but pre-race favorite…really?
The rest wasn’t much of a mystery, there was bound to be a dead heat with so many clones racing together and sure enough that dead heat was for third and then another for fifth. There will be some head scratching after the race for a few trainers, but we have seen again and again how difficult it can be to string any sort of performances consistently together. The winner though, well he looked the best on paper and was drawn perfectly for his style today, here is how they finished:
1st Ptyrannical Arindel Centeno D E
I always had this one bagged as a miler especially when he took the Mint Million and the Kilroe Mile last year before a very close third in the BC Mile but as he has progressed, he has started to develop his stamina and now he could be a very real BC Turf horse. Today he got his favored gate after two wide gates previously and took up a nice spot with very little effort. As they rounded for home, he was making stealthy progress and at this point the AI made a race winning decision to stay wide. The runner up was having his progress stalled as this one hit the front and from then on in despite a wide trip, he was all class and always held the lead with a degree of comfort.
2nd High Fives High Voltage Davis D
Well at over 100/1 he was clearly overlooked by the odds monkeys, but he has always been consistent, and those odds looked pretty generous. He was always going well just behind the leaders but whilst the winner was getting a clear run to the front the AI on this horse decided to climb all over the horses in front and he gave away the advantage. When he did get clear he once again showed that he is a grinder rather than explosive and he kept on gamely but without finding that final kick to win, If the leaders had parted for him as Ptyrannical was moving wide he may have got a winning break but in the end his chance had gone on the home bend.
3rd= Aerialist Mb Stables Ferrer J C
This six-year-old has been pretty consistent when the race engine has let him be and he once again ran his race ending up with a share of third in the end. If this was his best, then he may struggle to repeat his great third in the BC Turf last year, but he is the sort you can never write off at any level and I am pretty sure he will add to his Fort Macey win before long.
3rd= French Style Royalty Stables Dettori L
What a difference a year makes! Last year he was last in this race and this year he looked like he may win for a while before finding his on pace effort too much through the final furlong. That run last year was one of those HRP blips on an otherwise consistent record and considering his only wins have come at overnight level this was a decent effort.
