Fall Stars Weekend at KEE gets off to a roaring start on Friday here in HRP-land as we get three BC “Win and You’re In” races on a six-race card. In the card’s sixth race we get the 19th running of the G1 Alcibiades for the juvenile fillies. The lasses will go 8.5 furlongs as they compete for the $500.000 purse and the Golden Ticket the winner receives to the G1 BC Juvenile Fillies here next month. We have twelve entered from nine barns so let’s take a look at the field:
#1 Black Moon Concerto (TwinTowersRacing/S.X. Bridgmohan): Rail horse exits a winning effort over a sloppy LAD course in a N1X event. Filly has two wins from four starts, but she’s never gone farther than 6.5 furlongs. Has to go another quarter-mile here, but she is drawn well to employ the pace chasing tactics she’s diaplayed in both wins.
#2 Cold Storage (Rock Creek/E. Jaramillo): Was purchased for $25.000 and immediately broke her maiden at LAD before she took down a G3 at SAR. Hasn’t gone further than 6.5, but have to like that she’s settled behind horses and produced her run in both winning efforts. Filly could vie for favortism next month with an impressive win here.
#3 Smokin Cara (Alydar Stables/M. Franco): 2-2 in her career with a MSW over “good” course and a N1X over a “muddy” course. If you’re wondering how she’ll run over a dry course just take a look at the last work. Has to go quite a bit further than she’s raced before; however, she gets extra credit for both wins seeing as she was drawn 6/7 and 7/9, respectively. Class test for sure, but she looks the part on paper.
#4 Rabbit Bay (Smokey Stover/J.R. Velazquez): Filly hasn’t missed many opportunities to run as she will be making the 7th start of her season. Took a MSW on debut back in April and has multiple stakes/graded stakes placings as well as a N1X score at CD. Latest mile move was a big step forward from what we’d seen previously and she should be battle-tested for this assignment.
#5 Enunciate (Mb Stables/Ru. Silvera): Lass took her MSW at second asking, but has found winners to be a bit tougher to solve. She didn’t run poorly in either of the last two efforts, but she didn’t run great either. No doubting that she’s the least accomplished of the barn’s three runners, but she does have some speed and may just appreciate the stretch-out.
#6 Calm Fury (Mb Stables/A. Cedillo): Speaking of the barn’s other runners, this lass has two wins and two places from five starts. The CD N1X win was enough to get her in the G3 Pocahontas and she came with a rally to be 5th, beaten only a length. The two-turn experience should serve her well as only a few can boast the same and like that she is one that makes her run every time she runs in the afternoons.
#7 Liberty Lake (D J C Racing Stables/Ru. Fuentes): Lass couldn’t break her maiden in three straight sprints to start her career, but she seemed to relish the opportunity to stretch her legs in the AQU, 1-mile maiden-breaker. That latest effort showed she could stay close to the pace and still finish with some energy; however, that came only three weeks ago, so you have to worry just a bit about the quick return.
#8 El Gran Quench (Fractious/S. Elliott): Lass brought $150.000 to change barns before she’d even made her debut. Debuted with a strong runner-up effort at LS before running them off of the hooves with a four-length, front-running score going one mile at MTH. First time facing winners is never easy, and is doubly tough in a graded stakes field, but have to like how she carried her speed the whole trip last time and she may find herself in front again here.
#9 Doctor Quinn (Mb Stables/R.M. Hernandez): Broke her maiden in April before being purchased for $200.000 in June. Debuted for the new barn with a gutsy score in a SAR N1X before disliking the off-going the last time we saw her. Maybe we’re being too generous with that assumption, but this barn doesn’t shell out that kind of money for every FON maiden winner either. Gut feeling is this is the barn’s best shot in here, and, it’s a good one.
#10 Scarlett Dream (Arindel/L. Saez): Lass changed hands for $180.000 after debuting and has proceded to string together back-to-back wins for this outfit. Both of those wins were part of an extremely strong showing for the barn at SAR and she is working right there with the best in the field. Didn’t draw too well, but she has enough early foot to put herself in position and she feels like a major force to be dealt with in this spot.
#11 Tomahawk War (Smokey Stover/J. Talamo): Barn’s second runner isn’t quite as accomplished as her stablemate, but she’s done some solid work, nonetheless. Debuted 2nd before getting the job done at second asking and has faced stakes runners in both of her last two efforts. She hasn’t fared great, but the last effort was encouraging and the 5f may have been too short at that level two back. Like her stablemate, she showed improvement with the mile work and worked it in faster time.
#12 Creepy Chili (Chili King Stables/T. Gaffalione): DMR maiden-breaker came in her third try, but she showed a ton of potential with her rally in CD G3 last out. Lass seems to be thriving since leaving the sprint ranks, so she should appreciate the second try at this trip. She’ll have to pass quite a few of these late, but she’s shown the willingness and ability to pass good horses late. Anything less than three-wide should have her squarely in the mix.
Final Analysis: 9-2-10-4 is how we will play the G1 Alcibiades. Good luck to all of the connections!
