The 13th Running of the $150.000 G3 Seagram Cup Stakes drew a field of seven to WO with only a single 3yo deciding to tackle the six older horses in the gate.  Sanny Village (2009, 2010) took the first two G3 Seagram Cup Stakes with Pumpillian before Mb Stables (2016, 2019) equaled his total with Russian Whisky and Seagraves.  On the jockey side, P. Husbands (2009, 2010), J. Stein (2013, 2015), and R.M. Hernandez (2018, 2019) have each taken two of the first twelve editions.  Here are the seven entrants for the 2021 edition of the $150.000 G3 Seagram Cup Stakes on Saturday:

#1 Shanghai (Nakamura Stables/G. Boulanger 123): Rail horse took his first race for Nakamura Stables in February of 2020 in the G2 San Pasqual and has gone winless since.  Seventeen straight losing efforts leaves the impression that he has found the trick for running just well enough to lose.  Gets an advantageous draw in this, but will need to find his fighting spirit to make an impact.

#2 Remson (John Henry/R.M. Hernandez 123): John Henry-runner will break from post two and is another that has left his backers with the feeling that there is more in the tank than what he usually shows.  Did take the Great Lakes here two back, but this post could be a bit tricky fo him as he usually likes to get his feet underneath him before firing.  Could contend for the top prize or could never lift a hoof and neither would be a shocker.

#3 Home Spirit (Night Rider Stables/D. Fukumoto 123): Last two efforts were by far his worst runs in nine starts for Night Rider Stables.  Looked like a horse on the rise when he won the G2 Californian in April.  Needs a form reversal, but his best would certainly be good enough to contend.  Not sure the pace scenario works in his favor to fire his best shot in this one.

#4 Angelsinheaven (Angelos Stable/K. Kimura 123): Angelos Stable makes the decision to stretch this guy back out to 8.5 furlongs for the first time in over a year for this.  Has hit a rough patch after G3 MD Sprint victory in May with two third-place finishes to show for four races.  Could see this one popping the gate and grabbing the early lead and rail position; however, he has several questions to answer if he wants to win this.

#5 Combat Wombat (Maxmiliion Farm/D. Moran 123): Maxmillion Farm sends G1 Clark Handicap victor here looking for his first stakes win since that November effort.  Has taken two open allowances and is a confirmed dirt router.  Old guy can still win at this level when he fires his shot and have to believe he is the most likely winner if everyone runs their best race.

#6 Detained (Gdp Inc/J. Lermyte 123): Gdp Inc entrant is looking for his first win since the March score in the NY-bred Haynesfield.  Has yet to solve the graded stakes puzzle in three tries, but latest was his closest finish when 4th in G3 WV Governors Stakes.  Not sure he wins this as there is a lack of early foot throughout his form, but he can be running at the end and earn a check if he fires..

#7 Spankersville (The Sidley Stud/P. Husbands 120): The Sidley Stud enters the only 3yo in the field, but the wide draw pretty much negates the three-pound weight break.  Took his most recent effort with ON-bred ALW score over this trip and course.  Prior to that, he spent the majority of his 2021 season running on the turf at distances ranging from 5.5-12 furlongs.  Looks to be another that is pace-compromised in here and could find himself struggling to work out any kind of trip if the track stays fast.

Final Analysis: Fairly confident they hit the wire 5-2-6 or some combination of the three.  Good luck to all of the competitors in the 2021 $150.000 G3 Seagram Cup Stakes!
