1 RP RP Springboard Mile [KYD]
$200.000 2yo 1m Dirt 120lbs +penalties
2yo races will be the end of me, I swear… I just never seem to have a clue. In the RP Springboard Mile, it seems like a lot of people were off target as Accountant was sent off a nearly 15/1 odds and got home with a determined late move, winning by a half length in 1:352 for the mile, on the RP main track. Last City chased the pace throughout and settled for the place, then Lions Destiny third after having the lead in mid-stretch.
The field of eleven broke from the gate and made the short run to the clubhouse turn with Call Me King showing the way by a neck over Last City to his outside, back down to the rail for Lions Destiny and After Marker, Caleb Toothpaste in behind that pair then to the outside for Tequila Rise. Sunkist and Tiger Claw moving together, down to the rail for Ricki Tikki Tavi, then back outside for the trailing duo of Accountant and Empire Of The North.
Swing around the clubhouse turn and onto the backside with five and a half furlongs to run and Tequila Rise moved up on the far outside to take the lead by a length. Last City between horses, Lions Destiny along the rail, then the duo of Call Me King and After Market. Another gap to Sunkist, Caleb Toothpaste on the inside, Tiger Claw between that pair, then a length to Accountant, Ricki Tikki Tavi saving ground and Empire Of The North very wide and trailing.
Making their way down the backside and now headed into the far turn with a bit more than three furlongs to run, Tequila Rise had the lead by a half length, Lions Destiny on his inside pressing the issue, a length and a half to Last City, another length to Call Me King on the outside, After Market along the rail. Another two lengths to the trio of Tiger Claw between Caleb Toothpaste on the rail, Sunkist three wide, then two lengths to Accountant, Ricki Tikki Tavi saving ground then a long gap back to Empire Of The North losing contact with the field.
They moved around the far turn and entered the stretch, moving past the three sixteenths pole and right on time they were bunching up for the run home. Lions Destiny in front by a neck, Tequila Rise on his outside and trying to pull the upset, Last City a length back with a clear run at them, After Market saving ground, Call Me King towards the outside, then a foursome that included Tiger Claw, Accountant from the outside, Sunkist on his inside and Caleb Toothpaste, Ricki Tiki Tavi on the rail and Empire Of The North trailing.
Deep stretch and to the wire, Lions Destiny with the lead, now Last City moving well, Tequila Rise not going away, and Accountant now flying down the far outside of the field… and flying he was… Accountant found another gear and motored up to take the lead in deep stretch and the victory. Last City continued on well and secured the second spot, then the bang-bang finish of Lions Destiny third, Tequila Rise fourth. After Market nosed out Call Me King for fifth, then Tiger Claw seventh, Sunkist eighth, Ricki Tiki Tavi ninth, Caleb Toothpaste tenth and Empire Of The North closed this one out.
Accountant is a 2yo gray gelded son of Que Niagra – Fiscal Policy, by Asset Class, and he was bred in NY by his owner, D J C Racing Stables. This was his third win from seven starts, and he now has earnings of $214.300.
