Five Furlongs on the Turf
December 5, 2015
Laffin All The Way came into the CC Distaff Dash looking like one of the horses to beat, and she showed that December is indeed her time of year as she scores a win in this first ever running of the stake. Of course, Laffin All The Way has been good more then just during the holiday season as she came into the race on a run of winning three of her last four races. Now, we can make it four out of five since she was claimed by trainer Night Rider Stables from Riggins Racing for $15.000 on, well of course, the day after Christmas last year. This four year old filly could be on the verge of more good things next season if she is brought back for another year of racing. She’s been put on the KYO trail by her former trainer, so there’s never been a question as to her talent level. Aboard the winner was P Lopez, and for winning jockey Night Rider Stables, it was one of three wins in the CC races. Night Rider and Hambletonian combined for seven total wins in these races. Here’s a look at the race!
1st- 5- Laffin All The Way (6/1)- Our eventual race winner from Night Rider Stables was content to let her rivals have at it in the early going while she raced at her own pace at the back, about five to six lengths from the lead. As the top five seemed to just hold their positions steady as they rounded the turn, P Lopez was putting Laffin All The Way into gear, but still with a furlong to go, she still had to pass them all. P Lopez gave her a little bit of encouragement, and Laffin All The Way was ready to make his spirits bright in the stretch. With a half furlong to go, they were all lined up evenly much like how they could look if they just left the starting gate, but it was clear which one was on the move. She would be in an all out drive until the end to allow herself to visit the winner’s circle tonight! The time of the inaugural CC Distaff Dash was :56.87. Congratulations to our winner! Laffin All The Way is a four year old filly by Secretariat Way and out of Laffin Cantelope (by Laffin Policeman). She was bred in California by Riggins Racing and raced there until Night Rider Stables claimed her for $15.000 on the day after Christmas last year. Congrats again!
2nd- 4- Baloncesto (3/1)- It was an average start for the Hambletonian Stable entry, running in the middle of the field, alongside Pharmakeia. Rode alongside her stablemate for the duration of the turn, but would emerge with a better lane at the top of the stretch to make a bid. She did well to find the lane, split horses and put herself in a position to win. Unfortunately for the trainer, Laffin All The Way was making a run along the outside that was already bearing down on the field like a freight train, and she was not going to be denied. Baloncesto settles for a respectable second.
3rd- 2- Pharmakeia (30/1)- The stunning longest shot on the board was third early, assuming a position just off the lead by a couple lengths for Hambletonian Stable, throughout the backstretch and keeping this distance constant for the duration of the turn. Early in the stretch, she started to advance, and with a half furlong to go, she had as good of a chance as anyone, but she would just not be as quick as the top two.
4th- 1- Bombshell (2/1)- Got off to a good start along the rail for Second Chance Farms. In a good position as they moved into the turn only about a half length off the lead. Stayed along the rail, and did not add any additional pressure or challenge to the race leader over the course of the turn. At the top of the stretch, when things began to tighten up, Bombshell did not have answer, and would lose positions.
5th- 3- Kruzin Hot (3/1)- Shot out of the gate quickly and assumed the lead early for Axeman. She would lead the field into the turn, setting the opening quarter in :22.51. Maintained this lead through the turn as there was not a concerted effort coming from one of her closest pursuers to make a pass at this point. With a half furlong to go, they were all lined up as if they just left the starting gate. Though Kruzin Hot was in the position of being caught, and settled for fifth.
6th- 6- Secret Testimony (5/1)- The third entry for Hambletonian Stable never really showed her best stuff today, starting towards the back, and was not able to get a good lane for the turn. Did not show much during the turn. She stayed with the field in the stretch, and was within a length in the final furlong, but could not move forward.
