WO Mile (Grade 1) (BC)- $1,000.000 Purse
WO- For Three Year Olds and Upward
One Mile on the Turf
September 14, 2019
Close finishes in our virtual racing world are nothing new, but they are always entertaining to say the least. Saturday’s running of the WO Mile gave us one of those finishes, with a very tight three way photo taking place. Trainer Nakamura Stables was thrilled to see that it would be his horse, Decision In Five hanging on at the wire over two that were gaining on him in the stretch. From here, it won’t be a difficult decision on where Decision In Five goes next, as he punches his ticket to the BC Mile! It is the first win in the stake for both the trainer, and for jockey L Saez. Congratulations to them! Here’s a look at it!
(1/4 Mile- :22.91)- Our eventual winner, Decision In Five, was one of a few that broke well right from the gate, but he would not go all the way to the front. He would let ladies be first, and allow the filly in the field, Angelos Stable’s Rules Are Madness to take the early lead. Nice Dive broke well from the outside for Threshold, and was second by half a length, and then game the Nakamura Stables trained winner of Decision In Five. He had company to his inside as Devilish Luck, who would have preferred to have been that close to him at the end as well, was there for D J C Racing Stables, and Going Gone was fifth along the rail for John Henry. Two and a half lengths separated him from the leader. After Going Gone, there was a bit of a gap to the rest of the pack, with Long River (Aer Stables) a head in front of a four-wide group. Also here were Dreaming Of Pirates (Estero Farms), Cherra Grans (Team 7 Illusions), and post-time favorite City Of Bones (John Henry). Longshot Jamie Mach (RNP Stables) was next, then Call Me Godd (Sir Daniel Martin). Trailing were General Ferro (Mb Stables), Compress (Mb Stables), and Magne Bern (Gdp Inc).
(½ Mile- :45.99)- Rules Are Madness holds on to the lead in the backstretch and into the turn, but that margin is shrinking. To her inside both Decision In Five and Nice Dive are advancing and matching strides, pulling to be within less then a length. Devilish Luck and Going Gone were still looking good, and only had about two lengths to make up themselves. City Of Bones was emerging from the pack at this time while running four wide. Others were lined up much as they were at first report.
(Top Of Stretch, 2F To Go)- Decision In Five handles the turn well, outkicking Nice Dive, especially approaching the exit of the turn, to emerge as the race leader by about a length. Nice Dive is holding on to second while on the outside. The same could not be said for Rules Are Madness, who is beginning to drop out of it. Going Gone runs right behind Decision In Five here, and would continue to apply pressure. Devilish Luck, who had been with this group, is also starting to fade away. Behind them, they are really clustered together very closely between sixth place City Of Bones and twelfth place Call Me Godd. In would simply be a matter of which one of them would have the better lane. Positioned the best, it seemed, was City Of Bones and Cherra Grans, plus possibly General Ferro if could make the outside lane stick.
(Finish- 1:32.71)- Decision In Five is trying to hold on, and doing everything he can, but they are gaining on him. Cherra Grans has come on through from the back and has made a rapid advance. With a furlong to go, Going Gone moves over a lane and prepares to make the pass. General Ferro is coming on very strongly on the outside, and he is bringing Jamie Mach with him. Nice Dive is hanging tough. Up the middle of the track, here comes a late bid from Call Me Godd. Nakamura Stables was watching and cheering for the wire to hurry up! It was a cluster finish, something that we have seen before, but Decision In Five somehow, someway, held on for this win. Cherra Grans is second, and Going Gone third, and it comes down to the head bob between all of them. A length back, things were also wild for that fourth place check, with Nice Dive prevailing over General Ferro, Call Me Godd and Jamie Mach. Even Long River, City Of Bones, and Compress were within two lengths. Rounding out the finishing order, its Magne Bern, Dreaming Of Pirates, Rules Are Madness, and Devilish Luck.
About The Winner- Decision In Five, trained by Nakamura Stables and ridden to victory by L Saez, is a four year old gelding by Brave Decision, and is out of Gimmi Five. He was bred in the great breeding state of Pennsylvania by Nakamura Stables as a third quarter two year old, and they have been together through it all! Congratulations to the connections! The win is his fifth in 15 starts, his third stake win, and second graded win. His career earnings are now $938.900.
