Denim Queen earned the $100.000 booty for winning the one-mile Treasure Chest at DED on Friday.  It required a stakes record time, but the First Class Stable trainee was able to get by a stubborn Ku Deh inside the sixteenth pole and cross the wire first.  The win was the second of her career and first stakes victory.  She has earned $80.800 and now has a record of 6-2-1-1.

At the start, it was Icy Bay who led the other three horses through an opening quarter in :23.52 and a :47.44 half-mile.  As they reached that half-mile marker, Ku Deh was at the leader’s throat and assumed command shortly thereafter.  Denim Queen was short of three lengths behind that duo and Cp Skeleton Moons was another length and a half behind her.

Icy Bay could not match strides with Ku Deh and was quickly passed by the eventual winner before they reached the far turn.  At that point, it was a two horse race as Icy Bay was in full retreat and Cp Skeleton Moons was still well back.  Maybe it was strategy, or maybe Denim Queen didn’t handle the tight turn very well, but at the top of the lane Ku Deh was in front while hugging the rail and Denim Queen was out in about the four path.  Whatever the case, Denim Queen drew even at the sixteenth pole but may have avoided her rival’s detection and didn’t give Ku Deh a chance to eyeball her.  She made the pass, but wasn’t able to draw off from the rail horse.  She never relinquished her lead and hit the wire a quarter-length in front as she stooped the clock in 1:35.22.  Ku Deh was followed home by Cp Skeleton Moons (obviously burdened by her 129 pound weight assignment) and Icy Bay.
