Devil Made Me Doit Makes Maxmillion Farm a BEL Derby Invitational Winner

For a trainer with an impressive record on the turf, the BEL Derby Invitational trophy was a noteworthy omission from Maxmillion’s collection. He may not have had to make a deal with the devil to change that, but on Saturday, his horse Devil Made Me Doit would allow him to find peace, as he won the headbob with Found Peace at the wire. At last, Maxmillion Farm is a winner of the BEL Derby Invitational, as his latest turf star prevented Mb Stables from winning the race for the fifth time in seven years. The winning rider is J K Court, also a first time victor in the race. It would go in a time of 1:58.27, the second quickest of the races at ten furlongs. Let’s take a look!

(½ Mile- :47.37) What’s this? The top two finishers of a race going right out to the lead, doing battle with one another, and opening up a two length advantage over the rest of the field? I thought that couldn’t happen! Ok, well technically, the early leader by a neck, Found Peace, out of Mb Stables, was not the eventual winner. That would be Devil Made Me Doit, who was second to his inside early, for Maxmillion Farm. There’s a gap of about two lengths to Dreams Of Men, running third for Serenity Stables. Breath Of The Wild is half a length back for Smokey Stover, and it is a similar distance to Nakamura Stables’ Nevada Silver. Then, we have a very tight pack, consisting of High Planker (Smokey Stover), Afterburner (Arindel), Jakarta (Fractious), Evergreen (Mb Stables), Promised Prince (John Henry), and Broad Brush (Mb Stables). The trailers are Manchild (Arindel), Cobra Man (Arindel), and Darth Charley (Diablo Diablo).

(¾ Mile- 1:10.60)- It’s still happening! Found Peace has a half length lead on Devil Made Doit, with a gap that only seems to be growing a little bit on the third place Dreams Of Men. Breath Of The Wild is pulling up to his outside now to fight for that third spot, and then that tight pack behind them continues to be a cluster of horses where anything could probably happen at some point, but no one would know exactly what it would be quite yet.

(Top Of Stretch, 1.8F To Go)- Rounding the turn and moving into the stretch, you would be forgiven if you thought that Found Peace was about to leave Devil Made Me Doit behind. He’s extended his lead by a little more than a length now making it seem like he won the fight. Devil Made Me Doit is still ahead of third by nearly three lengths. That spot now belongs to Breath Of The Wild, who outkicks Dreams Of Men in the turn, and now sees a new challenger nearby as Jakarta is preparing to go around on the outside. Afterburner is close by and looking to come between them as they seem to be winning the battle of those that had been running in the pack. Manchild and Nevada Silver try to keep up, and Evergreen swings out very wide for a run.

(Finish- 1:58.27)- With a furlong to go, it still seemed like Found Peace had this race won, but then Devil Made Me Doit starting coming back on him, partly due to his own stretch desire, and partly because Found Peace was getting leg weary. At the wire, in the final stride, Devil Made Me Doit gets up just in time, getting the big win for Maxmillion Farm. Jakarta was quick in the stretch to be third, and Afterburner slipped by Breath Of The Wild for fourth. Manchild was closeby in sixth. The rest of the order is Nevada Silver, Cobra Man, High Planker, Broad Brush, Evergreen, Promised Prince, and Darth Charley.

About The Winner- Devil Made Me Doit, trained by Maxmillion Farm and ridden to victory by J K Court, is a three year old gelding by Always Dreaming, and is out of Warning Bark. He was bred in Kentucky by The American as a first quarter two year old, and was acquired by Maxmillion Farm in private sales for $200.000 in October 2020. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his fourth in ten starts, and his second stake win. He is 3-for-4 since being gelded.
