Rio Grande Senor Futurity, Purse $175.000, Ungraded, 5 an 1/2 Furlongs, Dirt for Males 2
This is a nice big weekend for NM bred horses with a group of stakes races at RUI. In back to back days it looks like you will have the best of the best NM bred 2 year olds due to the high purse in these 2 year old stakes races. In the male version of the race there are 6 horses who have lined up to do battle Let’s take a look at the field:
1-TH Watcher (Guidry Jr)- The winner of the DMR trials has won a stakes race already for his only win of his career. He has started 3 times and the other 2 starts have been third place finishes including a third in a stakes race last out. There are very few public works to go off from this horse but the ones that are out there are very fast. Based upon the good start to his career I feel that this is one that has a legitimate shot at taking down his second NM bred stakes race.
2-Gonna Get Girl (Running Farms)- Comes into the race with just one start in a MSW race in April at TUP where he finished 4th by 3 lengths. Since that race he has come back to the track in the morning with some nice works that shows that the race and the time off has allowed this horse to grow up a bit. The 112 an 4 track B last out at SA could show that he is ready to make a big jump in the afternoon, will it be big enough to take down stakes winners? We will find out.
3-Gotta Own The Light (Second Chance Farms)- He comes into the race with 1 win in 2 starts with his win coming last out in a MSW at ALB in June. The win came in a nice 57 an 2 seconds going 5 furlongs over the fast ground. He appears to have come out of the race well and posted his first public 6 furlong work in 111 an 3. Is that work going to be fast enough to push him over the top and get him a win against the best NM bred 2 year olds in the game? We will find out on Sunday.
4-Admirals Spirit (Barcelona Stables)- He was a $110 purchase by current owner Barcelona Stables from Drab Fantasy last month. In his debut he ran 5th and finished 3 lengths off the leader. Since that race he has come back with some very nice public track breezes, which show some improvement from his pre-race works. These track works show me that this horse has some early zip and may be the one to catch in the end. Can this one make the step up from being a maiden to a stakes winner, I feel he has a shot but it won’t be easy.
5-Akimbo (End Run Farms) Another maiden lines up in this race, that has just one prior start. He ran on the 4th of July and finished 6th in a MSW at RUI but was closing hard at the end. He appears to have come out of that race well, and has one public work since the race. This work shows improved speed and is his fastest public work to date which shows that he is ready to make a step forward. But like the other maiden in the race is it going to be a big enough step forward to take down a stakes race against proven stakes winners.
6-Triple Senor (Drabfantasy)- He has the most earnings in the race and has run in 2 stakes in 4 starts of his career. He has won one of those stakes races, and that is his only lifetime win. That win came last out on this track where he bested TH Watcher who is also in this race. Since that race he has come back and worked well with nice 5 and 6 furlong public works. The most recent 5 furlong public work in 58 an 2 shows that the win last out in the stake was not a fluke and that he is going to be right there in the end. He has to be the favorite going into the race off his win last out.
I have said it before and said it again, I love 2 year old racing and this race does not disappoint. I love that there are maidens taking a shot because the prize money is enough to make it worth the shot. Ultimately I think it may be too much for the maidens to do here as there are some classy horses in the race. Here is my prediction. 6-1-4-3
