The Troy (Grade 3)- $300.000 Purse
SAR- For Four Year Olds and Upward
Five and a Half Furlongs on the Turf
August 3, 2024
Drinkin Creepin continued his winning ways on Saturday by capturing the Grade 3 Troy, making him 7-for-7 on the year. He’s unquestionably the best turf sprinter in the game, and while “horse of the year” is not likely to go to a turf sprinter, let’s give him his due. He’s an incredible horse who is thoroughly dominant right now. Drinkin Creepin is an impressive 15-for-23 in his career, and a two-time BC Champion. But, when we talk about great horses in the game right now, this name doesn’t really pop up. Maybe it should! This is the fourth win in the Troy, and they have all come in the last six years. JR Velazquez had the honor of riding Drinkin Creepin, which is normally the case. It is his third win in the race. Congratulations to them! The time of 1:02.01 was among the quicker winning times for the stake. Let’s take a look at it:
(1/4 Mile- :22.29)- Bluesman will get credit for leading after a quarter mile, but the Spankys Barn entry has not pulled away from our winner. Drinkin Creepin likes to be on the lead, and Mb Stables is more than happy to see him there, and that is where we find him. He’s in the second lane right now, only a neck behind Bluesman. Old Fashioned is in the third lane for D J C Racing Stables. Next in line comes Apache Tomcat (Ajm Stables), with Six Pillars (TwinTowersRacing) at the back.
(Top of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- Drinkin Creepin handles the turn well, and begins to inch away from Bluesman as we reach the top of the stretch. Bluesman is a good horse, but right now has the distinction of being an also-ran when it comes to the dominant horse in the division. Their pace is too much for Old Fashioned, and I’m not sure that Apache Tomcat and Six Pillars are waiting for, but that’s Drinkin Creepin you’ve got to catch.
(Finish- 1:02.01)- Drinkin Creepin continues his strong run all the way to the wire, pulling away from Bluesman in the later moments to secure the win by half a length. A late run by longshot Six Pillars allows him to complete the exacta, and that’s a stretch performance that is good on anyone else for the win, more than likely. Bluesman barely held on for third over Apache Tomcat, and Old Fashioned is at the back.
About The Winner- Drinkin Creepin, trained by Mb Stables and ridden to victory by J R Velazquez, is a four-year-old gelding by Creepy Rene and is out of Fair Dinkum Thinkum. He was bred by Arkansas Elite as a second quarter two-year-old in California and was acquired by Mb Stables in September 2022 for $32.000 about two and a half weeks after he broke his maiden. Congratulations to the connections! As mentioned above, he is a stunning 15-for-23 with twelve stake wins and ten graded wins. His career earnings are now $3,520.800.
