LCD Lassie ($100.000 Purse)
FG- For Fillies Two Years Old Foaled In LA
Six Furlongs on the Dirt
December 14, 2024
The two-year-old stakes at FG were able to fill, so I’ll pick up the 15th running of the LCD Lassie on Saturday, which has also drawn a field of five. The purse for the race has been a consistent $100.000 throughout time, and that might be part of the reason the LA is getting passed over on the breeding side as other states have higher such purses. In 2023, T Boy Racing won this race with his filly, Timber Gem, but it would be the last time she won a race. She’s now a broodmare for The Sidley Stud. Here’s a look at our runners in 2024:
1- Million In Mind (Asgar, ridden by J Loveberry)- One for three in her career thus far, breaking her maiden up at DED in October before moving on to the $100.000 Ferguson Memorial Stakes last month. She was mediocre in that but was it not the type of effort that would have you lose all hope to try again. Let’s see if she does better this time around.
2- Feels Expensive (Oak Tree Stable, ridden by B Curtis)- A regular in running as LA-Breds, as she has done so in all of her starts to this point. Two have resulted in victories, including a good-looking score in the LA Cup Juvenile Fillies at the end of August, but then the wheels came off last LA Jewel where she was simply not herself. I look for her to be a lot more competitive here than she was in that one.
3- Confident Elegance (Wood Duck Stables, ridden by M Pedroza Jr)- This filly has been doing mostly everything right in her career, winning three of her four career starts. One of them was a stake, coming in the $70.000 Young Memorial Futurity- Fillies in August, which she followed up with overnight victories at SA and PRX. As is the case with Feels Expensive, she will have to carry two more pounds than the other three, but she should be able to overcome that and run well.
4- Skedaddle (Spb Racing, ridden by J Barbosa)- The most experienced entry in the field, having made seven career starts. She has hit the board in all of them but has only managed one win in the process. Solid runs in both the Ferguson Memorial Stakes and the LA Cup Juvenile Fillies mean she should be a contender here as well. Perhaps, she is overdue to get a win again, or maybe she just likes finishing third.
5- Amazing Flair (Asgar, ridden by D L Parker)- All the looks of a horse that was entered to fill the field. Just one start, running third at BTP on the turf, and that sends her here. Now, having said that, she does work well, so maybe soon she will be entered in a race like this to not just fill a field. And just maybe, she’s improved enough to pull off what will probably be a win at long odds. If those odds climb way too much, take a shot. She’s not hopeless here.
Prediction: 3-4-1-2
